Hey all. I have been pretty serious lately and have been lifting (combination of Kb work and free weights) 3x per week week and running (5 miles) 2x a week. I finally got my diet dialed in thanks to this forum. I have been feeling great....until last Thursday. I felt a slight "discomfort" down there and finally got into a doctor today. I have a FUCKING HERNIA! Damnit. Anyone here ever had one? How long is it going to knock me out of commission (after surgery)? I'm royally pissed. I'm doing the Tough Mudder next month, am I screwed?
I had hernia surgery about 20 years ago. IIRC, it took at least two weeks to recover. The first week I wasn't up to doing anything more strenuous than switching on the TV.
The pisser is the repair only held for 15 years...
P.S. Talk to your doctor about advisability of doing the Tough Mudder.
Bad enough you broke yourself once, don't go making it worse.
He is going to tell you 4 weeks more or less from the surgery.
Sucks.
That's a bit that I've yet to break, but it seems like based on what others have stated the medical community is no different about hernia recovery than they are about everything else which is that they are overly cautious and tend to look at you as an out of shape 55 year old who only cares about returning to the golf course on weekends.
Let your body tell you what you can and can't do.
IH repair Oct 2010. 2nd time. First was fifteen years earlier. I have a fitness schedule like yours. I started back slow. Listen to your body for sure - that's solid advice. I hit my deadlift goal 405lb last Friday FWIW :-)
