So I put off getting into smartphones for as long as possible. Now that I have one of the damn things, I can't put it down and can't stop modding it.

Is anybody here using unlocked / rooted phones? What for? Have a custom rom and kernel preference? Any must-have apps for rooted phones?

I've been running Codename Android on my Galaxy Nexus for about a week now with the stock kernel. After 14 hours my battery is around 60%, and that's after watching some Youtube clips, browsing, game-playing, screwing around, talking for about an hour and texting. Stock battery, as well.

Depends on the day really...yesterday was particularly good. Today it's overcast and I'm at 72% after 3 hours or so probably because the GPS keeps trying to link up. Not sure...

I had a Droid 1 and now a Droid Bionic and both of them I could make last for 3 days or I could run the battery down in an hour. Completely depends on how you use them.

I had a Moto Droid 1 that I rooted. It was a lesson in patience, with a few near-bricking incidents.

I am now rocking a Galaxy Nexus. I rooted it with a program that ran in a window. Click, follow instructions, and it is unlocked, rooted, and installed with whatever mod you want. All I did was upgrade to 4.0.4 though... It eats my battery, but I work in an area with SUPER CRAPPY 3g....

Mugzilla, try out Codename Android. With the new 1.5 kernel I'm getting crazy battery life...5% every 6 hours if it's just sitting in my pocket. I turn data on/off as needed. Generally unless I'm using the thing, the battery depletion is near horizontal.
