Monotony is the awful rewards of the careful
Just a friendly PSA for everyone now that the weather is getting nice and wrench turning season is officially in full effect.
Do not fuck around or cut any corners when it comes to properly jacking up and securing your car.
I just lost my second auto-x companion after his car slipped off the stands and crushed him to death while he was under it changing out a diff. He left behind a young wife and an 8 month old.
He was also a very experienced mechanic, which is unfortunately more often than not the case when this shit happens.
be careful.
Sorry to hear about your friend and thanks for bringing an important safety reminder to us.
Sorry to hear about your friend.
And I agree, and I emphasize with every loud word I can, guys, if you're gonna work on your car, please,
please do it
safely. This means jack stands, block the wheels, parking brakes, no, just holding the thing up with a floor jack or some cinder blocks while you're underneath ain't gonna cut it.
Good message. I had a car fall on me, just as I was squirming out from under it, just grazed me but was a split second from crushing my chest and legs. I had jack stands on one side, jacking the other up and was attempting to secure the stands when the jack tipped and it all came down.
Scared me straight about jacks. I still get freaked out underneath cars, and reluctantly work under them.
Sorry for your loss.
I had the jeep fall over with me under it. Lucky for me, the stands were high enough that it cammed the jeep sideways about 2 feet before it settled. Mine was due to a failure of a jackstand.
Sorry for your loss.
I hate working on my back under cars on stands. Something I have always done out of habit is leave the jack in place after I set the car down on stands and if I pull the wheels and tires I set them under the car.
Been using drive on ramps a lot more for basic undercar stuff, would love to have a proper lift.
yeah, I hate hate hate getting under cars. when I have to, I will, but I have good chalks, and always use enough jack stands to make the thing stable. then I try to put the jack so that it is an extra safety if something tips.
I spent the extra $$$ on made in USA Hein Werner jack stands.
Never go cheap on safety.
Why are all these vehicles falling?????
OP sorry for your friends loss
I probably got lucky more times that I realize and I was always pretty good about trying to do things safely.
This cannot be stressed to many time: If you're going under a vehicle to work on it, make damn sure it's not going anywhere.
Sorry it had to come up in this way.
Sorry for your loss.
My grandfather had one come down on him back in the 60's..Permenatly messed up back and smashed all his front teeth out.

sorry to hear about your friend OP.
I do the same thing as atomic ferret.
I'm always very cautious about how the car is supported. I don't trust retail grade jackstands. I'm a welder steel fabricator by trade and I have a pair of 70# stands made from gusseted .5" steel I use. And even then I double down by if possible leaving the Jack under the vehicle or at least the tires.
Be it a 3000lb mustang or a 80,000lb bridge girder proper support is mandatory to safety
Sorry to hear this, what a shame. My thoughts to you and his family, May God Bless.
I don't have mega-super jack stands, just Craftsman jobbies, but I cut up a big Railroad tie into blocks and I use those as "failsafes".
Happens with garage lifts too, one of my dad's coworkers got killed when their garage lift failed and collapsed underneath him. He didn't die right away, but they had no way to get the car off him.
