4T65-E Transmission
I have the HD version of this on a 2004 Impala SS. The car has 85k miles on it; never abused and about 65% highway miles. I've recently noted that the trans temp runs a bit hot on my car at about 200* +- 5*.
I've had the transmission serviced twice (30k & 60k) using synthetic fluid. I'm ready to do another service.
The transmission operates fine. I haven't had the issues noted by a lot of other people. But because of those experiences I'd like to know if there's something I can do to extend/protect the life of the transmission.
Trans cooler - I don't know if I have any kind of "beefed up" cooling from the factory. It would seem that I would, but the trans runs hotter than what I would expect with an auxiliary cooler. What can I do in this area? I don't want to bypass the cooler in radiator.
Valve body/shift kits - Is this something to consider? I've read that the "fix" for these transmissions is the Sonnax Sure-Cure kit. Is this an option or too close expense-wise to a full rebuild (a Triple Edge transmission is priced comparably to most remans).

You can add an auxillary cooler and still keep the factory unit operational in the radiator. You plumb from the output of the radiator's cooler into the input of the auxillary cooler. The output from the auxillary is then plumbed into what was formally the line coming out of the stock cooler and back into the trans.
I have no input on the valve body/shift kit.
The HDs have an auxilairy cooler within the radiator..Still doesn't do much.. I have an 06 monte SS with the LS4 hooked up to a slightly beefed up HD...They do run hot...Alot of guys have added a transmission cooler and have seen temps drop well into a safe range... From what I have seen, the best set up is running straight from the transmission to the aftermarket cooler, then to the aux cooler, then back to the tranny..I have all the required parts, just haven't installed it yet.
B-M stacked plates are supposed to work best, the ones with the bypass valves.
As far as shift kits go, I have heard good things about TransGo's kits....Triple Edge is from what ive seen, supposed to the best source for 4T65E-HD parts and services, but because of this they are backed up for quite a while...My TCC is going in mine, just waiting for the tranny to die before I get a replacement, lol.
Check your radiator for engine oil in it or brown sludge.
Possible coolant system contamination could cause it to run higher temps.

Well, aren't you a sunshine rainbow.

Thanks tho, I'll check that.
Absent a problem there, I'll just put on a finned aluminum transmission pan when serviced. And if that doesn't bring the temps down, I'll add an auxiliary cooler.
Other than that, I'll just replace it with a TEP transmission when it fails.
I wouldn't get too excited about the trans temp. They typically run at or near the same temp as the engine.
My '05 Vette has the same 4L65E trans and it's usually around 185-195.
If the temp bothers you, just add an external cooler in front of the radiator and it will come down a little.

Although I think that controlling trans fluid temperature is vital to overall trans health, that's really not high enough to be a problem.

Completely different animal. His 4T65 is transversely mounted, IE a transaxle. Your 4L65E is longitudinally mounted, Ala rear wheel drive.
That is all.
