Ball joint grease question
I had my upper ball joints replaced and lower ball joints checked out last week.
The lower ball joints are fine, but sometimes make a little noise. One guy at the shop told me that even though they are not "greasable" you can take a medical syringe with a small needle, push it through the rubber and squirt them full of grease.
Has anyone ever heard of this and is it a bad idea?
Thanks.
BAD idea. You say a person in the automotive repair business told you that? Sheesh...
I've done that before on my personal vehicles. You can buy a specific needle that fits on the end of a grease gun that will let you do just that.
I would see if you can get under the lip, or somewhere you can cover the hole you made with something, or a really small gauge needle. but I see nothing wrong with it.
don't overfill it. will just make the boot tear that much sooner.
not sure why the other poster thinks it is a bad idea.
only think I can think of is contamintation due to the hole you just put in, but it should make it last longer. more likely the boot will die before the joint eats it on its own, well with some truck exceptions.
Ok, thanks guys. I figure a puncture hole shouldn't hurt anything and should extend the life some.
It's not going to do much, you're not getting grease where it's needed, in the socket.

That's a valid point. Once a non grease-able ball joint is making noise you only have two choices; replace it, or puncture the boot and hope the grease will work itself into the socket.
All you will be doing s making a hole in the boot and allowing dirt in. The grease won't get where is needs to be.. in between the load bearing surfaces.
