"The Grey" (2012)
Looks ok the preview leaves a lot unsaid. I'm hoping they saw a town or something right before they crashed and they are making their way to it. Because if they fight those wolves and then are all still stuck in the wilderness that is just too depressing for me.
Pah! The trailer for "Battlkeship" looks more interesting!
Three words and a hyphen... LIQUOR-BOTTLE KNUCKLES.
Hasn't been a recorded attack by wovles in North America for a LONG time.
Interesting though. If the pack was truely aggressive and you didn't have a weapon my money would be on the wovles. They run faster, better hearing, better smell, see better at night, work together in a group very well, are smart as hell, and have a bite crush force of about 1,500 pounds per square inch. Trying to run through snow from a pack of wolves or fight off more than one...no way you'd be wolf shit in short order. However, most do not have the couarge to go confront people and aggressively hunt them.

If by long time you mean 2 years ago.
Working title for the film was "Liam Neeson wreckin some wolves' shit"

From that news story ...
It was the first fatal wolf attack in Alaska, and only the second documented case of a wild wolf killing a human in North America. There are an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 wolves in North America, including 7,700 to 11,200 in Alaska.
So long time, no, but extremely rare, yes.
This looks like a great movie. I'm sure there will be a lot of suspense.
I'll see it for the wolf-smashing.

That alone will probably make me go see it.
I had started this same thread in GD a while back. Turned into a several page one with mostly "wolves are cuddly like my german shepard vs no they aren't".
Sad really because I honestly would be more afraid of the cold in that situation.
Mr. james, if you are real, thanks for joining us. Do you have any updates on when a new trailer may be released?
New trailer out.
http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi1014865433
Gotta admit, I prefer the old one.
This new trailer just makes it look cheesy to me. Plus when Neeson's character said "we'll take them on one at a time", I roled my eyes. Wolves hunt in packs, not one by one.

It looks like the edge but its a wolf this time.
It's like the Titanic, but it's full of bears.
I would never travel anywhere with Liam Neeson. He has the worst luck...
i personally know 3 different people who have been stalked by wolves.
one guy ended up in a tree.
another time a guy had to stand up and start yelling at them as they got within 15 feet, all the while snarling and growling. he finally spooked them off by shooting near them with a .375 (he was black bear hunting on kuiu island).
another friend about 10 years ago was black bear hunting (also on kuiu island) and they were heading back to the boat through the woods after dark and had a whole pack running near them and began to circle them. he said it was very scary.
point is, none of the guys were attacked, BUT they all had confrontations with aggressive wolves.
it happens.
Well, I just got back from seeing the "The Grey" at my local theater.
This is a must see for any member of ARFCOM.
Whoever wrote the script definitely knows the type of men attracted to working at the end of the world. Some good, some bad, but as Liam Neeson's charcter states "men unfit to live with the rest of mankind." Looking at the characters you might recognize a lot of guys you know, have known, or maybe even see bit of yourself in them. I know I could relate to some of the characters. It's a real tense movie and it's a pretty heart wrenching movie. The character development is not extensive, but it is just enough that you do really feel invested in them and their ordeal. The action is tense and it never lets up for a single second throughout the movie even though you have a few parts of dialogue that attempts to lift it at points the tension is always still there. Special effects were amazing. The wolves are CGI, but it's not easy to tell that they are CGI and I have to say it's one of the best jobs on working in effects like that into a movie I've seen in a long time. The acting is top notch. Just top notch. Even the supporting actors are real damn good in this movie. Will it win Oscars? Probably not, but if I had a vote in the Academy it would.
I can't really say much more without giving away the plot so I'll just say this "The minute that this movie becomes available on Blu-Ray I will own it." I might even see it a second time in the theater. If you only make it to the theater once and a great while make one of those trips to see this one.
I liked it. Was expecting "The Edge" with wolves but got something a bit darker.
Really liked the end.

Oh man, I hate when they do that. I read it online though what happens.
I thought it was a damn fine movie, and the ending was very appropriate in this case.
+1
Saw it today...I would give it 2/5 stars. Very "meh".
I guess I'll give some specific gripes, so POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW:
It started out bad and really didn't go anywhere from there. Slow, incoherent beginning. Not much of anything in terms of back story. I wanted to take a nap 10 minutes into the movie. The script didn't make me care about any of the characters, so I had a hard time empathizing with them and was not sad to see any of them go.
The survival strategies employed in this movie make "The Walking Dead" group look smart. Let's walk AWAY from the plane, the only place you have a chance of being found? The plane is a source of shelter, fuel, and some food. Plenty of warm clothing in the luggage to go around. Loads of improvised weapons could be made from the wreckage (plenty of gnarly spears from all that metal), but this was abandoned in favor of a couple technically implausible boom sticks and some soon abandoned sharpened tree branches.
Were any good spear tips scavenged from the wreckage prior to their departure? Nope. They did have the touching (and by touching I mean incredibly stupid) idea of collecting everyone's wallets. Because if they made it out alive they couldn't possibly, by process of elimination, determine who on the manifest died. At least all the mangled corpses conveniently retained their wallets in the crash, and they were able to telegraph to the survivors exactly what pocket the billfolds were in (because they always seemed to find it in the first pocket they tried).
Our group departs into a blizzard (Great idea!). Did they improvise snowshoes from the ample materials left back at the wreck? Nope. They just tapped into their endless supply of energy and trudged through the deep snow. Their high energy levels apparently stave off snow blindness too. Does the group walk in a line all holding onto a rope? Nope. They let the weak, injured guy bring up the rear and fall way behind. Not a bad strategy in terms of survival for the rest of the group, but they all seemed surprised and saddened when the inevitable happens.
What is the groups response when wolves attack? RUN! Run to the TREES! Yes, because 1. we all know humans can outrun wolves and 2. Trees somehow offer protection from wolves. Did they by chance climb these trees to escape the wolves? No, although they did find themselves up a tree later (more on that soon). The only smart thing this group did was start a fire (by placing all their torches in one pile...at night...BEFORE they gathered fire wood...I guess they busted out the NVGs for that). They do manage to roast a wolf and get some food energy in them. We, on the other hand, get to suffer through some horribly robotic, unnatural, and contrived dialogue.
Now on to that gorge crossing/tree fiasco...was that really necessary? The group holes up near a cliff, and then decides to cross it with some very questionable improvised rope. Once they get across (predictably one group member lighter) the wolves are there to meet them. Hmm. Apparently the wolves had no issues crossing the gorge, maybe the humans could have thought of scouting for a better way across themselves.
The river scene really capped everything off nicely. I guess it was running fast enough to not freeze over. It surely was quite cold water though, snow runoff will do that. Our final two group members are again molested by the wolves, and they fall back on their regular response, run! Upon seeing them running on the precarious edge of the creek, I thought "If either one of them goes in that water they're dead (they just don't know it yet)". Well, not one but BOTH of them go in. And one is swept downstream so hard that he gets his foot caught between two rocks (although later Liam Neeson can easily stand upright in the same spot without needing to fight a current at all). The drowning inches below the surface bit was a cleverly horrifying way to die, I'll give the writers that. Upon our protagonist's exit from the water, I figured his lips would be turning blue and he would be shaking uncontrollably. Nope. Apparently Liam is immune to hypothermia. He only strips off half of his wet clothes too.
The final scene with Liam was actually the only OK part of the movie in my mind, although I think it could have been extended just a tad. (ETA: OK, I hear there is an Easter egg at the end of the credits that addresses this. Sounds like it wraps it up nicely...small honorable victory for Liam, certain death still awaits him though. I'm OK with that because the whole group should have died many times over earlier in the film).
Overall, the movie was just too predictable. I could tell whenever they were leading up to another group member getting killed. I could guess in some instances how they were going to die as well. When the guy with the glasses crosses the gorge, I thought, "He's going to look down and lose those hipster glasses"...amiright? When Liam was talking about the wolves den, and then they go trudging off into the woods, I jokingly thought to myself, "They're just going to end up right in the den, aren't they"...funny how things work out. The foreshadowing was just a little too transparent. There weren't any great twists in the movie either. Very cliche in many respects.
I will also add: Les Stroud would be disappointed. I think the gorge crossing with crappy improvised rope (cleverly disguising real rope) and the wallowing in cold streams is right up Bear Grylls' alley though.
I can't remember ever being this disappointed with a Liam Neeson film. Rotten Tomatoes "Certified Fresh" rating is starting to lose credibility with me too (can you say "Contagion"?).
No, even Bear Grylls wouldn't do something that stupid like jumping across to the tree.
Truly one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life.
I loved it. Its not a "how to survive in the Alaskan tundra" movie, but it was well acted, and very well done. The last scene makes up for any stupidity in the survival department.

This.
I saw the movie more about the human spirit then some gung ho BS film.
I loved it.
EDIT: Yes....there is another scene after all credits roll. Well worth it in my opinion. Thank GOD for the kid who stood up at we started the long march out and said real loud "Don't leave yet there is a secret ending!"
I enjoyed it and will buy it once it comes out on blu-ray.
As stated earlier... Its the human spirit and the will to survive that made the movie... Yes, alot of BS, but that's Hollywood and that's what sells movies.

Have you looked at the average American these days? They aren't the same stock as Jim Bowie or John Johnston.
I'd wager that'd be what happens to most real people.

This.
The movie did an excellent job of portraying pretty well
EXACTLY (if not exceedingly high probability) what would end up happening.
So RePp....enlighten us with your channeling of Daniel Boone....what should they have done?

Shit they should have stayed with the plane first of all. I could make a list of shit that should have been on the very bottom of the things to do. Included are walk across a barren tundra in a blizzard and leave the slowest man fall behind, jump off a cliff using clothes as a rope, not drank, not run from wolves, not fall in rivers in the middle of winter. The entire movie was full of retarded shit. Not to mention all the things the wolves did. So first of all the wolves wouldnt have attacked, they should have stayed at the plane and had 2 guys on watch and wait for help. The movie was retarded and 2 hours of plot holes.
While I agree on several aspects of your post, not everyone has the skill sets needed to survive. Again, we could critic the movie to death. IT however, is a product of Hollywood. I don't expect accuracy anymore then I expect people to actually make magazine changes and only shoot 30 rounds in a scene instead of 340 per mag.
As to wolves.....they are predators. I do not put anything past a hungry predator.

No shit those 2 lions killed more people then the plague by the looks of that cave.
