So I promised to build my daughter a wagon....
Finally got most of it done...I stuck with the original plans with a few modifcations...
I used 1/2" cold rolled steel rod for the axles and 8" ball bearing wheels from Lowes...
I routed a 1/2" dado to accomodate the axles and just capped the groove with a strip of wood...
Wood glue is more than strong enough to keep the axle rod from falling out.
The metal pieces are steel strapping you can get at any hardware store.
I used a big vice and a small sledge hammer to bend them into shape.
For the steering linkage, I used bronze bushings that I found at Ace Hardware, along with a 5/8" bolt and thick washers.
The bronze will keep the hole for the steering bolt from wallowing out and will make it easier to turn.
I'm going to drill a hole through the nut and bolt for the steering mechanism and insert a cotter pin to keep it from coming loose.
Base is poplar, rear axle block is ash, front axle blocks are maple and the sides are oak.
Basically, wood I had laying around...
Plans were free (old Delta plans)

Child labor was involved...
Everything fits together...now I just need to do a little finish sanding and apply the finish.
I'll leave the sides natural oak and paint the base and undercarriage red, with the metal parts black...

Wagon is painted and finished.
Looks much better with the red paint.
Used a good latex primer and outdoor latex paint..used a cheap Harbor Freight spray gun to apply it...it worked nicely...I just had to paint a bit slower than I normally would with a standard oil based paint....but it laid down the paint smoothly and evenly. I used Rustoleum followed by clear laquer for the metal pieces.
I went on a two mile walk with the little girl in tow...works nicely...I think it should hold up pretty well.
She will be pulling her kids in that thing some day. My grandfather made me a wooden step stool in 1981 so I could brush my teeth at their home. My son used it tonight.
Great job!
