So our Yellow Lab reached 9 months old and promptly got her period. I was gonna get her fixed at 6 months old but the wife unit read somewhere that its a good idea to wait out her first heat. I need help. What can be done to limit or keep things at a messy minimum?

It is actually better to do it before the first heat, reduces the risk of certain cancers.

Yep. Go to your local pet store and get your dog some feminine hygiene products. And be glad it'll just be dog-panties and not tampons or anything like that.

We got our a doggie diaper that you attached feminine hygiene products to. It worked well for us.

It will last about 3 weeks for you. Should taper off in week 3.

Just make sure that you closely supervise your dog right now. Males will come for miles. Jump over 6ft fences, dig under them, etc. A diaper will not prevent fertilization.

Not really. The vet tells you that because they make good money on spay/neuter and it's easier to do when the dog is smaller and lighter.

The real risk/benefit matrix is much more complicated. Leaving a dog intact for at least one heat cycle only increases risk of ovarian and mammary cancers slightly, and it leaves the hormones there while the dog is still growing which studies have shown causes proper and uniform closure of growth plates. There are other diseases that have a higher incidence in spayed/neutered dogs as well.

My Lab has had two heat cycles so far. For the first one we lived in an apartment so we kept her on the porch. Now that we live in a house out in the sticks we keep her in the fenced in back yard or basement.

She cleans herself pretty well but theres no way I would let her near our carpets.

I was holding off getting her spayed because I thought I would like to breed her some day since she's such an amazing dog but I haven't found the right "stud" I suppose. I might get her spayed after this heat ends though.

Please don't breed your dog. Leave it to the professionals. There are tons of dead dogs because someone wanted to breed their best friend and couldn't place the puppies.

That wouldn't be a problem. I've got tons of relatives begging for her puppies, but like I said I will probably end up spaying her when she is done with this heat.

To tide you over until you can buy a commercial product, you can take a small t-shirt and put her rear legs through the arm holes. You might need to pin it up or cut it up a little for the tail, etc.

This used to be the prevaling thought, but is not accurate
Actually better to let them hit maturity before doing it as sex hormones play a role in development
