my father got me into it back in the early 1990s. and i was always amazed on how he knew who was going to win every time. he used to tell stories about going to watch them wrestle back in the 70s and 80s and then you would see the bad guys playing pool or having beers with tony atlas or capt lou in the bar down the street. so tell me.... anyone else have any good stories like that?

No

But anyone from Minneapolis that was into wrestling back in the 70's would remember every Thanksgiving and xmas Professional wrestling at the Minneapolis armory.

Eat our holiday dinner and we all would head down to the Armory and watch,

Sod buster
The Claw
the crippler
the crusher
Nick Bockwrinkle
SGT Slaughter

And of coarse Mean Gene Okerlund doing all the interviews

I turned on my TV and it was on. "Impact Wrestling" I believe it was called.
I watched it for a couple minutes thinking it had to be some kind of a joke.
Nope, it appears that people are actually entertained by this garbage.

I know a guy at work who is VERY into wrestling. Not the pro kind, but the high school / college kind. One day I shut him up when I said:

If high school / college wrestling is real, where are the ropes? When was the last time you saw a "tables" match in high school? When was the last time a college wrestler used a chair in a match? Tag team matches? Is it any wonder why no one comes to see these things? I mean other than the parents of the kids wrestling, no one else shows up. It's not a particularlly facinating sport. Just two guys groping each other. If I want to see that, I'll watch the jerry sandusky (fuck be upon him) trial.
Throw some tables, chairs and ropes and you'll have people beating down the door to get in.

That pretty much shut him up......

I still watch it.

Sure there's bad segments of the show. The kid's segment and nearly everything John Cena does sucks.

The other segments of the shows are actually pretty good most of the time. I just treat it as an ''action comedy.''

I absolutely loved it as a little girl. More than cartoons. As an adult, I don't watch anymore, but I still love huge men. Perhaps my tastes were shaped by it?

Used to watch it all the time growing up. The old man was into it, so naturally I was too. Haven't watched it in years though.

I used to watch it back in the late 80s and early 90s.

My friends Mom was a reserve police officer and her office volunteered to do parking and security for the WWF when they came to Jacksonville.

She said she was standing in front of some curtains working security for the back when all of a sudden the curtains opened up way up top and she looked up and it was Andre the Giant looking down on her. Unfortunately she passed away but I always remember that story she told me and somewhere there is a picture of her and her friend sitting on top of Andre's shoulders.

She was the woman that got me back into watching wrestling and she was like my mother away from mother

Vince McMahon was just the announcer, it was in some small arena in NYC, had to be like maybe 400 people in the audience back then.

I thought it was cool until I turned eight or nine. I lost all interest in it after that.

I never got to watch the wrestling with Hulk Hogan and all of that crew.

We all watched the wrestling with Rick Flair, Dusty Roads, Sting, etc...

He probably shut up because he realized what an ass you sounded like. Wrestling is probably the only sport still around were the kids aren't babied. They shut up when coaches speak or they have to do push ups and run. They are taught respect and when that is not followed there is discipline unlike most sports that if you get bumped all the parents coming running down crying about poor Johnny. It's the toughest sport around and that's probably why it's not more popular because most quit or make fun of it like you do because you couldn't handle the work outs or the time it takes to become good at it.

I was never as into it as other kids but recently watched a few of the WWE documentaries on Netflix and they were pretty funny. I had forgotten just how awesome Ric Flair was. I was rewinding it to hear gems like: "I'm a jet plane flyin',limosine ridin',kiss stealin',wheelin' dealin' soe of a gun. I got the $100 slacks, the alligator shoes, the cashmere sweater, the $15k Rolex watch, the financial empire and ladies lined up all night long WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" so that I could use them at work.

That dude was all sorts of coked out awesome

WWF is like G.I. Joe, since the 80s relaunch of the toy line, its more about bells and whistles and more flamboyant characters and before that it was serious and were modeled after real soldiers and the villains were whomever the real life Armed forces were in conflict with at the time.

I watch it from time time. I try to get back into it but as for WWE story lines are getting worse and worse and TNA since HUlk Hogan came became worse and worse. The first time i had to stop watch wrestling was during the attitude era when smackdown was first on and Godfather had is Ho Train. Mom didnt like it.

Then High School Started happen to have it on TV and Stone Cold Steve Austin came back and gave everyone a little stunner. Watched it during all of High School. DX came back during that time. Awesome. Had me looked for a wrestling school, found one in Iowa. Shouldve had gone but college took a different path

Now only reason to watch is for "PUPPIES"

edit for spelling

AJ is cute & a decent Actress.

People Who claim to hate it are too dense to realize it's a melodrama performed in front of a live audience with no do-overs. There's a real possibility of being seriously injured.
Is it "fake"? No, it's pre-determined. The CBS/ABC/NBC/CNN evening news is fake. Movies are fake.

Never forget: It's an exhibition, NOT a competition, so please NO WAGERING !

WWE actually does refilm takes if something goes wrong. If a wrestler botches a move, they'll just do it again and cut out the mistakes. I've read a few show reviews from people who went to the taped events and they confirmed it. WWE probably doesn't shoot retakes on RAW, but they are supposedly on a half hour tape delay, so who knows.

From when I was about 10-12 I watched it. These were the Hulk, Andre the Giant years. After 12 or so, no never watched it again. My old neighbor who was about my age, still watches it. He also eats his own boogers(not kidding) pretty much sums of what I think their target audience is.

It evolved from catch wrestling, one of the most effective martial arts.

I know that some Japanese pro wrestlers have done well in MMA.

Here is some irony for you: catch wrestling is more effective then most of the Asian "traditional martial arts", and prior to Judo (1880s) was probably the most effective MA in existance. But catch mostly went fake sometime before WW2.

I think it began to go fake in the 20s or 30s. Pappy Boyington was a pro wrestler, someone tried to give him shit for it being fake, and that was in the 40s.

Then there is "Gracie Hunter" Kazushi Sakuraba, a former Japanese pro wrestler. I think Ken Shamrock and a few other MMA fighters went the other direction and went into pro wrestling.

I hate to say it but I'd rather watch soccer if forced to choose between the two. At least soccer is sort of a real sport.
