Surfing some Russian sites and I found this:
http://www.trizna.ru/tank/photo.htm
This is the first images of a Panzer III I have seen recovered. Honestly, I have only been looking recently, but have not seen any other pics of this tank. Anyone know what happened to it?
That particular tank became mired in a swamp in the Smolensk area in Russia. It was discovered and recovered in 2002 it's currently being stored in Belarus and is up for sale at approx $850,000.
Wow, it looks like a Mk III Special with the 50 mm high-velocity cannon and extended armor on the front of the turret. Sort of a stop gap modification to make it more competetive with the T-34.
Awesome find.

No, it's a Panzer III ausf J (Sd Kfz 141). It carries the 50mm KwK L/42 gun (note the length of the main tube [it doesn't extend past the lower glacis plate], and the mounting of the glacis machine gun and the drivers visor block [both outside the additional armor].
The Panzer III ausf J (Sd Kfz 141/1) mounted the HV 50mm KwK L/60 gun and the ball of the glacis machine gun mount and the drivers visor block are distinctly set back into the additional bolt on armor plate.
It doesn't help that whoever set up the page used a stock wartime photo of either a Panzer III ausf M (Sd Kfz 141/1) or possibly a Panzer III ausf (Fl) (Sd Kfz 141/3) (flame thrower) [the b/w picture on the bottom left].
Hard to tell the overall profile of the barrel in the b/w picture, the (Fl) barrel was still a L/60 but there was no taper towards the muzzle, it was just a straight tube.
ETA: It is an awesome find.

You have to wonder how many more are buried in swamps or lakes througout europe?
was it the same area where they pulled that t-34 out? it was in great shape and i think they got it running already, dont have the link anymore.
