My mother has her mind set on a .357 magnum revolver. She will not change her mind, i have tried. Any recomendations?

She has shot my firearms over the years so she has shot before.

Did she say why the 357?

What is the application? Home defense or carry?

Depending on how old she is, and how arthritic her hands and wrists are, consider getting her a HEAVY .357 like the GP100 (which I love to shoot!).

The heavier gun will absorb a lot of the recoil from even .38 or .38 +p loads.

My mom, distantly related to Annie Oakley, and a life time shooter (including deer hunting in Germany after the war) carries a .38 special 2inch. For a home gun she has a Ruger Security Six 4inch. If you value your life, do not ever get in front of her muzzle. Make your Mom's day, and get her both. Then spend time shooting with her at the range. It will mean alot to both of you....some day down the road. You will be glad you did it. 44

1. Get big one with heavy barrel.
2. Reload .38 special load in .357 cases
3. ???
4. Profit!

Nothing wrong with a K-Frame size revolver in .357. Your mom's biggest adventure will be sizing the grips so that she has the most purchase of her hands on the gun.

If she is looking for something smaller then the K-Frame, then I hope she has fired a smaller revolver in .357 in the past to know what she is getting into. Lighter weight .357's can be quite snappy.

Best of luck to you and your mom.

Be careful about this! Some powders don't do well with the extra space in the case... they can cause high pressures. I agree with the concept but be sure to choose your powder accordingly.

Why would you try to talk her out of it? She's a grown woman who apparently knows what she wants. Leave her alone.

Your mother sounds like she's made a smart choice. I don't understand the problem.

My wife's favorite pistol for around the house is a stainless 4" Ruger GP 101 in .357 Mag.

She loves it.

Everyone who shoots it comments on the fact that it doesn't kick as badly as they expected. I think that it is soft shooting.

It's a pretty sweet weapon to shoot! I was hitting 24" gongs a few weeks ago, at 100 yards, using stock factory sights. I was hitting maybe 30% of the time!

(Fiocci 142 grain solid-nosed bullets.)
