 Tricare/SAIC Letter - 4.9m records "lost"

I got a happy little fucking letter in the mail on Saturday.

Did anyone else get their letter from SAIC? Apparently, Tricare is having their shitball contractor contact Tricare beneficiaries (rather than do it themselves) because some SAIC douchebag lost a set of tapes with 4.9M records.

The theft of these data tapes happened in September, people are being notified now. Folks are getting offered free credit monitoring for a year (after a year, I guess we can all just go fuck off). I don't have the form in front of me, but I'm not sure why this isn't an opt-out program. Unless these assclowns lost their only copy of my info, they already have it - I shouldn't have to provide this shit again.

Will be calling the SAIC fuckwads tonight.

It pisses me off because we went through this in ~2002 with TRIWEST. After a huge review, apparently nothing got fucking accomplished.

I got my letter too.

I am so pissed at these Contractors lately that they really do not give a damn beacause they will just lowball again next year to get a contract or be the sub for some small business that they aquire after they get the contrats. I hate being a COTR.

Looks like a typical scam , the first sentence in the letter is hobbled garbage. They ask for you social security number and other information. Don't send that shit in!

Tricare data breach

TRICARE Management Activity has directed SAIC to provide one year of credit monitoring and restoration services to patients who express concern about their credit. SAIC will also conduct analysis of all available data to help TMA determine if identity theft occurs due to the data breach.

If anyone is concerned that it is a scam, this is the contact number.

Concerned patients may contact the SAIC Incident Response Call Center, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time, at (855) 366-0140 (toll free) for United States callers and (952) 556-8312 (collect) internationally.

To everyone who has received this letter. It's REAL. I called Tri-Care to make sure and they told me it is so. I told them its pretty sad that they personally haven't sent a letter out explaining to its customers that their contractor lost their information and the steps to take. When I first read the letter I thought it was a scam. A sick one at that. I am still uneasy giving a company my info when they lost it in the first place....

Why is Tricare involved with credit monitoring?

They lost a lot of military records such as service mens SSN,Name, Birthdate, etc things that a Identity theif could use to screw up your credit/life. They are now offering those of us that got our records stollen a year of credit monitoring.

Just an update. I went through the letter carefully. There is no contact information for Tricare in mine.

It appears Tricare strong-armed SAIC into offering credit reporting for a year... which they promptly subcontracted to another company.

You can sign up for the credit watch online... that's what I did. The validation code (or whatever it is) is hard to find on the letter, but it's there.

I got a quick response to my AKO mail. Apparently, even if nothing happens with your credit - they're going to send a periodic "no activity" email.

I got the same letters for my entire family, kids and all. Not to poor gas on the fire, but I heard some DB civilian took a laptop home which was left in their car. Guess what happened to it! Yep stolen. Not that I'm Wiley Coyote Super Genius or anything but why would I take a laptop home with me. Just to leave it in my car.

Makes no sense to me, but now I've got to watch my 10 year old son's credit report for the next 8 years at least.

I haven't received a letter, but I'm prepared if I do.

Monitoring is what it is, but the best thing that you can do to ensure that you are okay is to freeze your credit. It is anywhere from free to $10 per credit bureau (depending on the state you live in) to freeze your credit. Do it.
