Lure vs. Live Bait (trout)
Which is more efficient for you?
Do you all catch more trout on live bait or lures?
I have used Salmon eggs, Powerbait and Worms. I haven't really been that successful with any.
I want to try some lures....
How does the Panther Martin Trout spinners and Roostertails sound for trout lures? Preferred colors?
Thanks guys!
John
I use Panther Martins and Mepps spinners. I haven't got around to going only a few times this year. After this weekend maybe.
Panther Martins can be picked up for around $2.00 each shipped on ebay.
Silver, Gold, white w/red dot, rainbow all seem to work. I've got a large assortment.
I haven't used roostertails much except the super small fly rod type on an ultralite with a small sinker forward.
i like the panther martin gold blade, black bead with yellow dot. I also LOVE super dupers and kastmasters!
these are my go-to's

A buddy of mine has been catching some decent size browns and rainbows with the freeze dried smelt. I think the 2 or 3" ones in the yellow
and clear packages from Wally World. This has mostly been in smaller County site lakes.
So, technically "live" bait, well, it was at one point.
BTW....this is in N. IL.
Fuck lures....Worms bitches...
Check out little cleos, those are my favorite all around trout lures (that aren't flies)
When I go fishing up in Southern Missouri:
Size 10 or 12 hook on 4 lb. line.
Small lead split-shot weight about a foot to a foot and a half up the line.
Two artificial salmon eggs on the hook, one white and one orange.
Rainbow trout can't resist. Just cast, move the sinker to a nice looking spot, and let it sink. The eggs will float about a foot to a foot and a half off the bottom. The only thing left to do is take a quick sip of your beer before the fish bites.

Fishing creeks/streams I always had more luck with live bait, worms, grubs, beetles, etc. we caught right there in the woods around stumps, rocks, logs.
Fishing ponds/lakes I always had more luck with lures. The little gold panther martins or the little mepps spinners or a grub with salmon eggs on the hook under a slip bobber.

+1 been catching lots of rainbows and a few browns with worms on the bottom...
Find a eddy then milk with salmon eggs.
Wait a bit.
Then use red devils and eggs or even a single hook with eggs on them.
Jointed Rapala for huge trout. Berkely trout worms in cheese color broken in half and placed on a #10 or #12 hook in a crescent shape like this ( will work too. These are the small 3" plastic worms, not the power bait worms. Those are my go to baits if I'm not fly fishing.
Red Hot salmon eggs and/or corn is about the best. This is the least work and they like the best. Red Hots are simply the best but can be hard to find. If you can't find it, smaller the egg and redder the better.
I do better with little spinners than worms though worms work. Surprisingly caught quite a few on small minnows not even fishing for them.
Artificial stuff, I haven't tried the Berkley Trout bait so can't comment on that. Baitmate classic does improve your odds and have been wanting to try their Dough scent for trout. I will comment if you find the rare Crawfish Baitmate, about everything that swims loves that stuff. It must be like a lobster dinner to them. I basically use the scents when the water isn't as clear.

BTW, You ever try ultra-light fly fishing? It actually works.
I, personally, don't believe you are taking on much of a challenge with live bait, so I don't know if I have ever trout fished with it.
I can remember the time I was out fishing at 6 am with lures and had a grampa and kid come to my spot of the river, on both sides of me, fishing with worms. Needless to say, I packed up and left. Talk about etiquette...

Damn those people who fish because they want and may need food. Trout fishing is a sport for the man of means.

No. If I needed fish for food or I didn't want to use anything that required much skill, I would put a worm on the hooks of as many poles as I could find and go sit by the lake.
Now, if we are in the Survival forum, I may not give the same answer.
But until then, I fish for the challenge (and enjoyment) of the sport. No "man of means" required.

That's the point. What you approve of has nothing to do with the OP asking about live bait. Each man has his own reasons for fishing and he's not a lessor man because he wants to drop a worm on a hook. Though often where people start, its not even wise to assume those who do are not proficient with a lure or fly either.
Its the old tee stand vs stalking in hunting. Whatever tickles their fancy.

I won't waste my time on this squabbling, but the OP was asking opinions.
"What I approve of" = my opinion, last time I checked.
I sometimes use bait, and sometimes I use spinners and spoons, but from the time I was able to physically do it I have fished for trout using flies and a casting bubble.
I don't know how common this is around the world, but in the AZ white mountains it's fairly common, the way my grampa fished, they way all my uncles and my father fished, and how they taught me.
