OK guys, I'm not a fisherman. I used to fish w/ my brother when I was a kid, and haven't done much more than that since. The last few years I've dropped some worms in the water off of grandpa's boat w/ my kids, but didn't pull anything more than little pan fish (little, 3-5 inches). I got a kayak last summer and plan on getting on the water again pretty soon now that the lakes are not iced over.

I fish in the 'burbs of Detroit, specifically the Plymouth/Northville area (Newburgh and Pheonix lakes) and Lake Missaukee up in Lake City.

So...How do I actually go about catching a dinners worth of fish when I head out? I've got a rod and reel, and various tackle, but I don't know anything about using it other than how to tie knots and cast!

Help!
K

Memorial weekend AAR
I went to my in-laws condo on Lake Missaukee for Memorial weekend. Saturday morning I headed over to the local bait shop, bought some circle hooks and minnows (on his recommendation). I spent most of the day on and off the water, maybe 45 min to an hour at a time. While on the water I was trolling minnows behind my kayak, and caught 6 keepers!!! 4 crappie, 1 blue gill, 1 pumpkinseed. I also caught about 10 non-keepers.

Very little fishing on Sunday. Monday morning I jumped on the lake early, but nothing was biting, so I paddled hard for 20 min across the lake. The wind was pushing me back to the condo, so I drifted for awhile and got a pretty decent crappie. Then a deluge of rain hit, and I started paddling home. I really put it in gear when the lightning and thunder came!

I'm "hooked" on the circle hooks. Every catch had the hook right in the lip! No swallowed hooks!

All in all, I'm hooked, and my wife already says I'm thinking and talking about fishing to much!

It's a bit hard on the environment, but it works every time.

I would suggest checking out your department of natural resource website and see if they list any local lakes.

Ya' see, they don't know, either. Otherwise, they'd be all over this thread braggin' 'bout this one or that one that was so HUGE! You know, like that YouTube video of the bowfishers where the fish were jumpin' INTO the boat!

Dynamite, eh? ...No lie?

Find yourself a bank (lake or river) with some fallen brush. Start throwing in hooks around the brush. Keep trying different things until something bites.

Check out Ready2Tackle.com
Capt. Todd knows where the fish are.
The wife, son and I went out with this guy and caught 100+ silver bass in about an hour. We are going back for walleye.

Use Silver and/or gold "pheobe" lure, rooster tail, or if your wallet allows try a few rapalas.

Fishing reports can be of some help. Really, just keep trying until you find 'the spot' - then never tell anybody where your spot is. Good luck to you.

I've always had good luck with live bait(nightcrawlers, leechs, minnows, etc). There should be a MI outdoors site where folks get on and discuss local fishing and hunting. I'd start there.
