so I have a late 80's Johnson 150 VRO outboard. lately I have been noticing the voltage climbing as high as 16 volts while running around. normal its closer to 15V but even that concerns me.
i'v been looking around on line and it seems for every person that says its bad for the voltage to get that high, there is an equal number saying its in the normal range.
SO! does something need to be fixed? or is this normal for an outboard. i'd much rather NOT toast a $70 batt if i can avoid it.

Have you confirmed this reading with another known good voltmeter? Preferably a multimeter. Marine gauges aren't known for their accuracy or longevity. If it checks out at 16v with another meter, start checking your ground connections on the motor for starters.

I would still confirm that voltage with another meter before condemning the regulator. Checking the grounds is free and a good idea anyway on an older motor.
