 Dog bug-out bag

I've been thinking more about this. I have a 5 lb dog food in my regular bug out kit but I probably need a few more supplies.

This is for my 10 year old yellow lab.

What are you guys carrying for dog bug-out load?

I wont be carrying any of it... as in my dogs will be wearing hiking vests with each of their own items (and probably some more of mine that I couldn't fit). One of my dogs is older, so she may be left to hold down the fort (sad but true), however my four year old APBT will run 40 MPH with 40lbs of weight, so he's coming with me.

Contents of bags will be as much dry food as possible, and maybe some footies for rough terrain.

ETA: and those collapsible feeding bowls.

My dogs have the following and they will be carrying it themselves unless they become uncapable.

- Ruffwear Approach Packs
- Ruffwear Fleece Jackets
- Collapsable Bowls
- 20lbs of food each
- Freeze dried liver treats
- Small first aid kit (with common meds for dogs)
- Garbage bag
- Small bottle of water

We have a small bag like that for our GSD ("Nuke"). One important thing to have in there is a muzzle. If you have to beat feet and take your furry bioweapon with you, there are going to be times you need him to be absolutely nonthreatening to others. I also pack extra leads, extra collar, copies of vaccinations, doggie first aid kit, water, small foil pouches of dog food (vets usually have samples to give that come like this), and that sort of thing.

Keep in mind that with a muzzle you are limiting your dogs ability to cool himself by panting (depending on the muzzle) so use it only when necessary, and not for long periods in warm weather.

First aid kit, and not just a doggy one. While hiking I typically put the first aid kit on the dog because there are times when the dog may be able to reach an injured person in a more timely fashion that other humans in the group. The dogs also carry dog food, collapsible dog dishes, dog booties (for their feet!), and water. Remember that the pads of your dogs feet, though tough, can become worn, raw, or torn on long hikes or while going over tough terrain.

I've always heard that dogs are lousy pack animals and you have to limit the weight they carry.

What percent of body weight are you guys having your dogs carry (assuming a quality pack and a fit dog)?

Dogs are not "pack" animals, they are "pack animals". You will soon have an invalid animal if you attempt to employ your dog as a pack animal.

Please ensure your dog carries no more than 25% of their body weight in their dog pack.

40 mph my ass... A good quality Whippet can do that but NOT a pittbull... Keep on thinking so if you like.

Loading a dog down with that kind of weight is asking for trouble. Would not do it with any dog of mine.

If I tried putting a pack on my dog she would just look at me like I was stupid!

Like Amundsen at the "Butcher Shop" and Nansen and Johansen at the top of the world, my in the crunch, my dogs will eat our scraps, then be fed each other. Then, the last standing, my Best Friend {he is, too} will get scraps from my own table until there are no more, then I'll eat him.

I have no preps for my cat. He'll survive on scraps if SHTF.

Scraps...

Just remember, they need to get in and keep in shape, too. So don't over work them.

I've been thinking about a pack for a while. I had a lab years ago that pulled me on my skis, and this guy might do the same, but if so, I'll carry all the weight.

His food is all he needs, and some dog shoes if it's summer time. He shares my water, and my 1st aid kit.

Yeah, he gets alot of that. We'll be walking down the street and people will slow their cars and yell "Thats a beautiful dog!". Not a lot of purebred GSD's here in Montana, it seems.

I don't wanna threadjack, but here's a buncha pics of him doing his thing. ( link1 and link2)
