Two MRE questions
There are unlimited selections out there and from my reading the majority aren't that great.
1 - Which MREs have the reputation for actually tasting good.
I saw one MRE where you just add water (even dirty water) then drop in a tablet and it generates heat which in turn cooks the food. (I am not sure if this was unique to this brand or common for all.)
2 - Which MREs use this type of chemical reaction to heat instead of an actual fire?
The egg omelet is by far the best as it comes with skittles, and all military MREs come with water heaters.
Taste is really personal.
I really don't find any of the current meals terrible tasting,
I also do not find that they constipate me or cause any ill effects.
Basically yo9u can get military MRE's and civilian MRE's.
Military MRE's come with heaters that are activated with a little plain water.
Some civilian versions come with a version of the heater that requires both water and a salt tablet to create the reaction.
mreinfo.com has more info about MRE's than you probably want.
and they even have a free i-Phone app for MRE info on the go.
Chili Mac #10
Spaghetti with meat sauce #20
they keep fucking with the rest making it all Mexican food or Jambalayass. Never understood that one- cinncinnati isnt exactly know for creole cooking and thats were the jambos made.
Only 2 I ever would eat. used to be mostly ramen in a canteen cup, jerky and lose 10 pounds per FTX.
Chicken and Noodles by far the best you have to make it right though.
and chilli and beans. (PUT THE JELLY IN THE CHILLI its the tits)
Everything except the fig bars and m&m's go into the main brown MRE bag. Crumble up the crackers, put in the cheese, the main meal, all the salt, all the sugar, and all the creamer(yes creamer). Mix it all up... enjoy.
When you talk about "eggs and skittles", "Chili Mac #10", "Spaghetti with meat sauce #20 " and "Chicken and Noodles" are these for a particular pack?
Can you order a case of just "Spaghetti with meat sauce #20 "?
sloppy joe is a awesome mre.

As I read through it seems you can buy mixed cases from 1 of 3 vendors.
There are other places where you can buy individual meals or buy a case of one particular meal.

Yep......along with the Chicken Breast with Feta Cheese & Tomatoes.....Beef Brisket with Gravy....Chicken & Dumplings.....Meatloaf with Gravy (and a pouch of mashed potatoes of course). The Buffalo Chicken is pretty good also!
Where are you guys getting you MRE entrees at?
I usually use Emergency Essentials, however they have a limited selection of the entrees. The Epicenter has a lot of different ones available (pot roast, hash browns, chicken noodle, Mexican chicken), but their shipping is pretty high.
Any other suggestions?
I used to get MREs by the case from the PX at McDill. Those were good times.
Nowadays, there are a couple of places that carry them, but the selection is limited. There is, however, one place that I've ordered from before that not only has a decent selection, but you can get individual items. Check out
Long Life Food Depot.
They also carry the squad-sized rations.
I don't think any of the MREs were made to add dirty water to. The heater packets don't get them hot enough for long enough to kill all the living stuff you might get in dirty water, and aside from that there is often chemical pollution in dirty water which won't be "cleaned" by heating it. If you mean just cooking it in dirty water, that might be ok, but it would be risky since you eat right out of the packets.
I'm pretty sure he means using the MRE heaters - ie, the pouch goes into the sleeve, add water, it heats the pouch up.

The water is only for generating the heat to cook the food. Afterward the water can simply be tossed.

Thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback. This is a great list.

Yes, but since all the "nasties" that are in the water are now on the pouch, there is a chance for contamination as you eat. Who knows what kind of spores, bacteria, virus, poison, chemicals are in the water. I would use clean water, or eat them cold.
If you really want to know what MRE's are all about-f ind the dehydrated beef patty (if they still make those f––-ing hocky pucks

. Seriously though, taste is individual, and the improvement between what we got in the 80's to now is night and day. I can't reaaly complain about of the recent stuff I have had, and if you are hungry, trust me IT WILL TASTE ALRIGHT. And those self-heaters...great innovation, really improves flavor when you get to eat this stuff warm.
Beef Stew or Corned Beef Hash....Heat them up, crush up the crackers and dump them, the salt and the Tabasco in to the pouch and mix up.

this goes to show you how much tastes can vary
it would HAVE to be a survival situation for me to eat the omelet. however, i love me some chili mac, the burger is ok, the pork rib is decent, the spicy penne pasta is awesome (vegitarian meal, but still good). hell, i like the veggie burger.
i woud recommend buying a few here and there and just see what you like before you do any bulk purchases.
The newer MREs are all pretty much a head above the earlier generations. Which you personally prefer is a matter of taste.
All .mil MREs come with the heater bags
I like #13 in B case. Beef brisket is good to.
