 Lost a chicken

One of our auracanas died today. Only a year old, no signs of trauma, had no indications of anything wrong. I was saddened by the loss, very surprised I was saddened by it - she was a very good hen. What's ironic is we picked up 6 bantam chicks this morning for the kids' 4H project.

Anyone else lose a hen that young for no apparent reason?

Yes. Lost one in the early winter. Became lethargic, wouldn't leave the roost and by the next morning she was dead. It happens.

I suggested we pluck, dress, and eat the hen and the wife flipped out. Guess it was too early for humor.

I've become a fan of home grown chicken. Unfortunately its not anywhere as economical as store bought considering you get get chicken on sale @ $0.50/lb.

That is true but home grown Chicken is not even the same kind of meat as store bought chicken. I love to eat the roosters.

I let roosters get to be 6 months old about the time they all figure out they are jackass's and start humping everthing and wont shut up. Then I kill one a weekend till I run out. Best meat around.

This one made it to 10 months before he pissed me off.

I've never lost one due to illness, but I did lose a chick to a chicken hawk a few months back. Damn thing somehow grabbed the chick through the chicken wire. Also thought I lost one a week ago, but it was just mangled a bit. Damn raptors everywhere out here.

Cut it opne and see what you can see.
Crop bound is usually pretty obvious, externally, but have had hens get egg bound as well.
And sometimes, stuff just dies.
