Going on an Elk hunt in CO. and am told the bear population is pretty large, what is the recommended backup gun?
Large cal. pistols or 12 ga shotguns with buckshot?

Presumably, since you are hunting Elk, you have a large caliber centerfire rifle with you already. Either keep that with you at all times or get a .44 for when the rifle is cased or youre on the shitter.

One big can of bear spray......If you're packin in that far, it's alot easier to carry than a heavy sidearm!!!

i'm thinking a 6in .44mag is going to be the option.

Law states it must be(for big game) .41 mag or bigger.
I think this is a good choice.

What unit are you hunting in?

A 6" .44 will do all you could ask for in that role.

How bout a 5.5"?

With something like these...300gr (or heavier) hard cast or JSP. Penetration is the key with scratchy critters.

Honestly if you've got a hunting rifle and you're dealing with black bears I see no need for anything more then a good .357,but that's just me.
Now if we're talking Griz? ok get the damn .50AE out!

You already have all you will need should you bump into a belligerent bear or cat, which isn't very likely. I never pack a pistol when I am hunting with a centerfire rifle. Coming from sealevel you don't want to have to pack anymore weight than necessary. Air is scarce commodity in Elk country, LOL.
I always pack a pistol, however, when I am just going up the mountain. YMMV

I don't pack a pistol either if I am carrying a hunting rifle. Air IS scarce up here and frankly I don't worry too much about bears or mtn lions here in CO YMMV. If I don't have a rifle a 357 or 9mm usually is hanging off the pack.

Hahaha we would always ask clients if they new the difference between grizzly shit and black shit. Answer: Grizzly shit smells like pepper and has little bells in it.
