An interesting read, if you can find it in a used book shop:

999 Survived: An Analysis of Survival Experiences in the Southwest Pacific, by Richard Howard

It describes the experiences of various airmen downed in WWII's Pacific Theater and the lessons learned from what they did.

One non-survivor described in the book gave up too easily. He came down in a parachute and was caught in a tree, hanging upside down with his head in an ant mound. The rescue party found him dead with his empty 38 revolver lying on the ground––- five shots fired into the ant mound and his parachute harness, and the last round used on himself.

I could not find a pdf link, but it should be out there somewhere as it was originally a government publication.
