 VX-8DR - which extended battery?

Ok I've found two different extended batteries for the VX-8DR

2000mAh Li-ION Battery from Batteries America for $45.95

Or

2000mAh Li-ION batter from iMax Expert off of Ebay for $39.50

The price is pretty similar so not too worried about that. Is anyone familiar with these companies and know which one would produce the best battery?

The only requirement I have is the radio being able to fit into a cradle to charge and know sometimes this is an issue with the extended batteries.

I'm looking at picking up 2 of them.

Thanks.

Funny you posted this because I was looking at that last night and wondered what the catch was... quality? duribility? will it fit? etc?

It's way cheaper than the 18mah that they sell here in the US.

Last year I purchased two of the batteries from Batteries America. The batteries are ¼“ thicker than the 1800mAh Yaesu battery and the batteries fit in the drop-in charger for the VX-8DR. After a year of service the Batteries America batteries are comparable to the Yaesu battery.

Seems to be the batteries America is the preferred one over iMAX. imax probably makes a good battery but I don't want to take any chances and probably go with the batteries America. It's good to know they still fit on the drop in charger, I thought I read somewhere that it was an issue.

I'll end up picking up 2.

i have one for my vx7. the battery will fit in the charger but only by itself and not attached to the radio. might check that for the vx8

Yes I was reading on another forum about the cradle issue. Kind of sucks, it is nice to be able to just drop the charger in the cradle without having to remove the battery. Really kind of the point of the quick drop in cradle chargers.

I've also read that batteries america was supposed to come out with a 4000mAh charger & also a new cradle to handle their larger batteries. I'll have to contact them to see.

WW has the best chargers IMO. They make charge cups for any radio. They have their own batteries, too. I've had their universal UC1 charger for years.

My only complaint is they are a bit slow as they don't make the cup until you order it.

So I ordered 2 of the 2000mAH batteries from batteries america for my VX-8DR & after receiving them I found out the batteries are not waterproof & therefore neither is the radio now, which defeats the purpose of spending hundreds more dollars for a true waterproof radio.

Really sucks.

Does anyone know if the 1800mAH batteries offered by Yaesu are indeed waterproof? (I would assume & hope so)

Also does anyone know if there is a charger that will plug into a USB port for this radio?

i just got an email from the ebay seller

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160768986394&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123#ht_4521wt_1396

he states the battery does in fact maintain the ipx water rating on the 8gr. looking at my gr factory battery there is no gasket and i am guessing the radio itself is sealed as there is a silicon gasket around the radio contacts and on the battery contacts itself but nothing actually sealing intrusion between the battery and the case.

i am not aware of a usb charger. i doubt the output voltage/amperage is high enough

also my 8gr uses the same batt. there are no gasket on or around the battery itself. i assume the dr/r will have the gasket on the radio.

So taking a look at the Batteries America & the Yaesu batteries, they both appear to be exactly the same, no additional rubber seal is on the Yaesu battery.

When I remove the battery from the radio, I see that the battery terminals inside are safe with a green rubber seal.

But I'm wondering/worried about the outside contacts on the battery that are for using in a drop in charger - do you guys think these getting wet is going to be an issue?

Obviously the lithium battery inside is sealed, so I don't see how that could get wet?

What do you guys think?

shouldn't be an issue in general. the ipx rating is for the radio, not the battery. water intrusion in the battery "might" lead to battery failure long term but won't harm the radio. there is no voltage on that circuit unless the radio is in the charger.

i broke down and ordered the extended batter from batteries america today. the stock battery only ran about 4.5-5hr with the gps and arps running today. thats just not going to be enough as i need it to run a full 8hrs or so. hopefully the 2000mah will get me there.
