Need some advise for my white tail hunt coming up.
Can anybody share and maybe shed some light for me on my very first hunt. I'm not worried about the weapon of choice nor ammunition. If your interested, I will be using my AR15, haven't chosen which .556 brand-name ammo I'm using yet, mounted with a Trijicon AccuPoint TR24G, 1-4X magnification. Now I need help with what would be the most logical plan to do. Iv studied a topo map of the mountain I will be hunting, and know where some streams and water holes are. But I'm still going in blind cause I haven't done any recon, ( never glassed or searched for tracks or trails ) no food plots, tree stands, and most likely ill be making a natural ground blind, if some of your help is telling me to stay in one spot. Some say to track and stalk the whit tail. Now you see how I'm going in blind to this area/hunt. Can anybody share some advise on the best thing for me to do to better my odds for a ( spur of the moment ) hunt. What would you do if you where going on a week long hunt, and only seen a topo map. Id appreciate any help I can get. Thank you for anything in advance.
going in on a new area is tough. if you cant work around a specific deer drawing feature, i would find a spot close to the top of a ridgeline ( if its hill country ) and set up. deer like to travel along this kind of terrain and if you can find a spot above a bench youll greatly increase your odds. happy hunting.
what part of n.y. u in? meybe i can be of more assistance.
I will be in Roxbury, NY. I believe its right south of Oneonta, and west of Catskill. In the area of Delhi.
If the property you are going to hunt has a saddle on a ridge, park your butt there and wait.
Try to locate saddles (dips in ridges), benches (level spots on sides of hills), or funnels. A funnel is basically any terrain feature that narrows down a deer's path of travel –– a narrow strip of woods connecting two forested areas, an area between a steep hillside and a body of water, etc. You can find most of these features on topographical maps without having to step foot on the property before you hunt.
message me. i know the area very well. ill be hunting about 15 minutes away from ya.
Mad4madness, thank you. That was great to learn something new of that caliber. Especially the terms you supplied and defined will help me a lot.
I know with all this useful information, and as I hunt more and more. I know my skill level will go up and I can pass down the knowledge that I know and learning from respectful hunters as yourself. Someday I will be able to return the favor to help out other fellow hunters. Thank you.
stream's an watering holes, good start... have Topo USA an on 3-D can look at different angles, an find funnels leading to water, it also shows the different canopy... first time ya may not see anything, just enjoy...
Sit still. If you do walk take 2 steps every 5 minutes.
Real hunting is not like the hunting shows. rattle or grunt and 5 minutes later a booner walks into range.
Shot placement is key. GO SLOW!
Above all enjoy it - harvest or not. Welcome to the addiction!!
I recommend checking out the sticky for using .223 for deer hunting at the beginning of this section. Very useful info there.
Thanks guys. All this info is helpful. I really didn't think id get anybody to respond to my post. But I see there are people out there that's willing to help. Thanks to all.
