Question about which shotgun to take deer hunting this weekend

I have a 20 guage H&R USH with a leupold 2-7x. I've only put about 5 rounds in it after I got it last march, and it was pretty close to being sighted it. Not dead on, but within 2-3" of point of aim at 25 yards. It's been in a case since the last time I shot it and hasn't really moved.

I also have a Maverick 88 with a 28" field barrel and an 18" smooth bore barrel. I haven't shot slugs through either of those barrels. This was definitely a last minute opportunity that came up, and I'm not going to get a chance to go to the range to re-sight in before I go. I have both 12 and 20 guage slugs available.

Apparently these deer are small, and will only be 20-30 yards away. Do scopes have a tendency to work loose after time? Should I use 12 guage slugs though the bead sight?

It is unethical to hunt with any gun that is not for sure sighted in. I wouldn't want to take a scoped gun that I hadn't checked zero on, and I wouldn't want to take a smoothbore that I have never shot slugs through to see how they behave.

My advice would be to wait a little after daylight to start your hunt which would give you a few minutes of light to check zero on either weapon.

Of the two, I would take the NEF every day.

Unless a scope has been banged around it shouldn't loose zero.

And at 25 yards you should just have to look down the barrel to hit a deer with a slug, however you really should give it a try I had one .410 shotgun that would shoot slugs about a foot.high at 25 yards.

Given your choices I would take the hr.

Definitely what is said here. Use the NEF since you know where it shoots. Keep your shots to 25 yards since that is the maximum range you sighted for. Good luck.
