If you were going to scope...
A 270 for general hunting, where would you go? 3-9x40? 4-12x40? 3-9x50?

Within each line, the ones that sell the best tend to be feature filled examples that provide value for the hunter/shooter. This means 2-7's (and 2.5-8's), 3-9's (and 3.5-10's).
I have told people that I think the best scope under $500 is the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40.

most of the time I see game it is in the first or last light.

Until you move into very high end optics, the internal lenses don't transfer enough light for the 50mm obj to make a substantial difference. Plus, you have to mount it that much higher above the bore.
eta: as compared to a 40mm
6x36 FXII fixed Leupold or 6x42 Nikon (if you could find one)

As if there is some universal
right way to scope a rifle.

This.
Everyone will have an opinion on how to scope a certain rifle. You are the only one who can choose what works best for you. Scopes compared to shooters is like Ammo compared to guns, what works well with one, might not work well with another. I personally like a lower power scope with a "larger" objective lens for when I shoot, where as my girlfriends dad prefers a higher power scope with a smaller objective lens, all for the same rifle. The easiest way to find out is to find a shop that has several of the scopes you are interested in AND has an indoor range to test it on.
ETA: when I say lower power with a "larger" objective lens, I'm referring to lens size in relation to the power, i.e. I'll use a 3-9x40 set at 3x instead of a fixed power 3x scope with a 32mm or smaller objective lens.
I like 3-9x40. Most economically priced and versatile, IMO.

That's what I use and I rarely zoom above 6x. I have that size on all of my rifles except my Marlin XS7, which has a 4-12x50 on it (with a 30mm tube)
I have a 4.5-14x VX3 with the B&C reticle. This scope has made a believer of me in these kind of reticles; I can hit a 12x12 plate from the bench all day long at 500yds with my 270wsm and I firmly believe the glass is the reason why. The magnification is not the deciding factor either. I had it at 10 or 12 power so I believe a 9X would have worked just as well.

Bingo. I use a 6-18X40 on my 30-06.
Been told its "too much" and that "you'll miss anything close to you".
Took my deer at 50-60 yards dialed down to 6X just fine. All personal preference.
A 3-9x40, preferably a Leupold.
2 - 7X
Smaller, more compact.
the 7x will give you all the magnification you would
ever need for deer hunting.
just my 0.02

3.5-10x40
Look at the FOV on the 4-12 you mentioned. On Leupolds at 100 yards it is only 19 ft. The 3.5-10 minimum field of view is 30 ft at 100. And max power of the 12 is only a little better. You loose a ton of minimum power view area only to gain a little bit more zoom. Something to look at.
most of my scopes are 3-9x40,now that i think about it.
clown
Out to 300 I`ve found over the years that my fixed 6 power Zeiss has served me very very well. It , with enough info about your caliber, allows for some VERY quick shots.
Depends on your location. I've got different rifles set up different ways.
1-4, 2-7, 3-9, 4-12 for the most part.
It seems like I grab rifles with 3-9's on them the most often.

^This Leupold is a damn good scope. If you want a 3-9x40 the Zeiss Conquest is damn awesome & the eye relief is pretty long, too, throughout the power range.
I assume this is going on that 28" barreled Encore Prohunter? I'd get the lowest possible Talley lightweight mounts that will keep the scope from hitting the barrel & clear the hammer.
Ended up buying this
Bushnell Elite 3200 Bone Collector DOA 600
and the DNZ Game Reaper medium one-piece mount.
The Bushnells I've looked through were nice and clear. The 1 year warranty listed is a bit concerning, though. The DNZ mounts are pretty dang stout. When you get it set up, how 'bout a pic or two of the finished product!
3-9x40.
I've taken deer from 5 yards to 350 yards with it on my 30.06.
The largest buck I've ever shot was at 10 yards, uphill, while I was laying behind a log.
And if it's during the rut, you won't always be able to get them to stop running with a whistle, andt trying to get a bead on a fast moving deer at 30 yards with 6x is silly.
If you're hunting the middle of a 100 acre field, sure get a big scope. I hunt the woods, sometimes it's pretty thick, so there IS such a thing as "too much scope" for me...
Any "power" above 10 and you will have to deal with "mirage" at long ranges, so I just use 3-9's on hunting rifles. I learned this shooting f-class at long range matches.

I'm with you. Heck, I really just prefer a fixed 4x.
3x9x40 buying the best quality within you budget optics is one of thoses place that you really do get what you pay for well most time any we have leupold gold rings that have been through a couple generations and still work well
3x9 by 50's for virtually all my hunting rifles. I do have a Leupold 4x12 Mk 4 w/long range duplex on my
precision AR though. and 1.5 - 5x on my 12 Ga slug guns.
Not a fan of putting peoples "logos" on my stuff like the green bone skull......
But, if the scope fits your needs (quality, price, usage) than more power to you!

that is exactly what I have on my 270. it is the most I have spent on a scope and the best I have used.
I use 3 x 9 x 40 and I keep it dialed in to 6 x. You will rarely need anything more for whitetail, unless you are hunting over 150 yards. Then, I dont have any advice to give.
