I've never been hunting, but it's something I want to get into...I've also been looking for an excuse to get this knife

.
It has a 3.5" blade, and I was thinking the rounded tip might be somewhat useful for not stabbing yourself while working inside the deer, and might help to prevent accidentally puncturing organs. Also the seatbelt cutter seems to pretty much be the same thing as a guthook. But then again, all my knowledge of dressing deer comes from Youtube. Opinions? Am I way off base with my assumptions?
It will work fine, but a sharper tip makes it easier to start the process. A guthook is not needed if you use two fingers like a "V" to lift the skin up away from the guts as you're opening it up, with the knife in between. Just don't put the blade in too far & don't push the blade towards yourself, ever. Easier done, than said!

You will probably want something with a sharper tip to get going.
Having said that, I think I could field-dress a deer with any sharp object

should work you can pull up on the hide and make a cut or puncture the hide you have pulled up to get started
