Video: What's up with this yote? NSFW language
Hungry? Rabid? Playing?
You see this exact thing on the North Slope a A LOT!! People working on the slope feed the foxes and the foxes get to a point where they will walk up and take food out of your hand. What a lot of people dont understand is that most are rabid up there.
I've never, to my knowledge, seen a rabid animal. Grandpa used to call them "maddogs". So I always assumed they would act like a vicious, foamy, mad dog.
I have since seen a few youtube vids of rabid critters and that's what made me wonder about this guy.
Odd, not a single growl, yip, or bark in the whole 5 minutes. Appears to be a healthy yote so I am assuming he is just habituated and has no fear of people. But sick or not, that bastard needs shot. If that was a child, it could have turned out far different and we don't need wild animals like that around. Wild animals should have a healthy fear of humans.
Id have shot his ass the min he got to close. Rabies shots suck!
Thats how they all come in when you turn on the Foxpro lol
I had a small fox follow me around for about 1/2 an hour a few years ago. He never got closer than about 5 paces though. I thought that was pretty cool. I was out rabbit hunting at the time so I had an old single shot H&R 12ga. I wasn't worried about him.
This guy though...I think after about two minutes of, "hey, hey, GIT!" I'd have dropped him too. I'd have hated to do it but I don't like the idea of "friendly but nippy" wild animals either.
Better safe than sorry I guess.
I've seen enough rabid animals that exhibit the typical drunken walk and crossed enough mangy and hungry ones to know that the yote in the vid was healthy and looking for a free meal. I had a dog around the house when I was a kid that would act like that, never bark or growl just wanted food, she'd nip and get aggressive if I didnt have anything and just wanted to play. I was too young to understand that wild animals want food and not your company. That was a beautiful specimen in that video.
Nothing wrong with that coyote that one of my 60gr V Max handloads wouldn't fix!

Yep.
I've seen that several times. Always thought it was very odd. Pretty dog though.
I don't know if I would want a coyote that close to me. Very weird.
this is what a coyote attack looks like. coyotes are the ultimate con man. they never outright attack you to your front, always nipping your butt and ankle. you bleed a little, then a lot, then you are sleepy. Over the course of 2 days the coyote will kill you and you thought he was funny at first.
Yeah, something isn't right with that one. I would have given him a good swift kick in the head (assuming I wasn't armed). Like was said before, they should have a fear of humans.
ETA: what I don't get in this video is the "hey, hey, git!!" and the holding out of the hand for him to sniff/bite
no, everything is right with that one. He was able to spot odd behavior in a human. See? The human became a prey item based on odd neurological symptoms/behavior. All the coyote needs is for the man to fall inthe snow where large veins/arteries are available to be cut. At that point all it takes is time....

A good looking yote with too little fear of humans.
Ill never let one get that close to me IF I can help it.
That idiot with the camera should of dropped the thing, the dog is just looking for an opening to make him a snack.
the guy with the camera GETS IT. He is obviously very educated on predatory behavior and he knows the game. I'm glad he videod this. I have some people in my family who are stuck on the Walt Disney view on wildlife. In this world you are either prey or the predator. What the coyote did is no different than 4 hood rats fanning out on you. Most people refuse to believe they are about to be attacked. They think if they believe it will be ok, then it will. This lone coyote has the ability to kill an adult human by bleeding him dry. soon you feel sleepy then it's nighty night. A shark is just a fish but when you are in his house you are his snack. Same for the coyote.

I am sure he videoed it for those poor fools who believe this friendly representative of God's kingdom was sick, or perhaps confused, or just playful. None of the above: just hungry.
I'd say that idiot doesn't realize he is being sized up and he is lucky that thing didn't show up with friends. That yote may be habituated but when you don't have any food for it then your next on the menu.
And there is no rabies there. I've seen a rabid raccoon. Walked in circles, growled, fell over a lot and was skinny as hell. That is a healthy yote.

This is the only part of your post I disagree with. WTF would make you put out your hand towards a wild predator that you can see is acting agressively and sizing you up? I understand the not turning your back part, but why would you reach towards it? Why would you get down close to the ground near him? (I'm assuming this part due to lower camera angles at a few spots)
This guy sounds like a Canadian

. I'd have shot it as soon as I saw it...but then again that's me.
This one was definately not rabid, I have seen rabid animals and this certainly was not one. Last one I saw was a raccoon half dead on the side of the road in the middle of the day. This was probably one of the nicest looking yotes I have seen.

My family STILL believed the yote was being playful until they saw the biting. Not calling them idiots but damn, had it not been for the guy allowign the repeated bites they would have thought walt disney himself was about to narrate the entire happy scene with bunnies romping with mountain lions. The biting had to be filmed.
The guy with the camera is lucky he didn't at least lose a finger or two. That dog was looking for an opportunity to get a bite.
You may be right.

I can see the yote grabbing and ripping off a finger or two just to see if it tasted "worth the effort."
Hmmm. Probably his pet. I've seen several coyote pets.

Thats what I was thinking. I have seen and know people with pet deer, antelope, bobcats and coyotes. This antelope a guy I know named "andy" would chase the shit out of you, the thing was smart.
I wouldnt have killed the thing but diffinetly would have fired warning shots to scare it and make sur it knows who is boss. That fucker is tricky though he looked so happy and playfull like ur house pet, but you cant blame him he's wild. Imagine if a couple kids woulda ran into this playful dog. they woulda got there ass chewed for sure
Definitely a bad idea from the start.
Rule #1 - Wild animals don't domesticate well and eventually they will all attack
Rule #2 - Predators are hardwired to kill/hunt prey
Rule #3 - Don't try to domesticate (I would also say habituate to humans) wild animals or else you will become prey (e.g. Siegfried and Roy the lion trainers).
IMHO any predator (and some ungulates) that have become habituated to humans need to be removed to protect humans and the wildlife themselves. This becomes more imperative when dealing with species that facultive (sp?) learning (learning from others). What this guy did is reckless and should not be tried. Hopefully someone will remove this coyote before he shows up with others
YMMV
Looks to me like he was testing the camera man to see how far he could get.
That yote really liked the dudes shoes. Musta been hungry.
That dog was nice and clean. Well kept. Bet a nice wager it's the guys pet! If you get them before 3 weeks they don't get the instinct because they're still on the nip –– fact!
