Reccomended Sidearm.
Something in a medium to high range, automatic. I would like to think 9mm is enough, but for discussion purposes, how do some of the off norm cartridges fare? i.e 357 SIG and 10mm. I was told 10mm is an excellent choice and most commonly found in the Glock 20 version. Are these two calibers manageable, recoil and $$ wise? Are the cartridges easy to find? (I consider easy to find ammo as something I can buy at walmart)
Call me anti old fashion, but I'm not a fan of wheel guns.

I carry a police trade in G21 every time I go hog hunting.
10mm is good just very expensive to train with. Go with a glock 21sf or a glock 17 IMHO. But buy what feels best and has a good rep.
I carry a Glock 22 w/ a 357 SIG barrel in it (G31 I believe). I had always wondered how well it would do.
Well, I took my first piggie with it the other day, 15y headshot on a 300lber brought it down, double tap to make it quicker.
For the cost of both ammo and gun, you cant beat the G31 (compaired to the G20).
You can usually find a police trade in for cheap w/ nightsights and additional mags, ammo is much more common than 10mm (unless you reload)
and recoil is easy to tame w practice. Plus it comes in the smaller frame size for those who have smaller hands and full-mid-compact frames.
If cost of ammo/availibility (and my time to reload) wasnt an issue, I would go 10mm all the way. One day I will so I have all flavors of US manufactured Glocks, but until then, Ill be happy with my 357 (which is a souped up 9mm round btw)
9mm works fine with the right load. Win 147 gr. Ranger SXT

or a 10mm will do it too!

Coonan 357 magnum, cocked, locked, and ready to rock.

They had a show on the Pursuit channel called like Razer Dobbs something or other, where the guy was hunting hogs, and killed a couple with something similar to what you have pictured. I believe it was a Dan Wesson rz10 ? 10mm 1911 frame Dan Wesson. Looked pretty sweet!
mine is an IAI Javelina 10mm. made in the late 90's in California. it's all stainless with some custom work. uses Delta Elite mags.
I usually carry the same gun I carry day to day. Either a 1911 in 45acp or a M&P in 9mm. I carry what I am familiar with and shoot often. I have a 44mag and have never used it to hunt with, I just don't shoot it as well as I do my other guns.
Now if you are looking for something specificaly to hunt with as a primary then you might want to consider some of the options mentioned in this thread.
Glock 20SF. Buffalo Bore 180gr HP 1300fps. 730ft-lb muzzle energy.

This is my backup

I take my XDM 40 with me whenever I hunt and leave the house.

This will be used as a back up only and an every day shooter. I have my long gun as a primary. The M&P coincidentally is something I've been eye balling for a long time. I have it in me that my next purchase should be a 9mm, as I do not currently own one. A new M&P can be had at Bachmann for like upper 400s? Close to 5. I hear nothing but outstanding feedback from current owners. The only negative comment was about the trigger reset. Up for discussion I suppose. Any way, this would be holstered as a side arm while I turn little piggies into this;

Do you enjoy your M&P?
I enjoy mine so much I bought another just like it. I have a thread here where I killed two with one shot from my main M&P. I pretty much only use a pistol to hunt now and it is mainly the M&P.
I have hogs on my place in Oklahoma. I bought a Glock 20 after watching one hog survive 4 shots of 9mm. I have dropped several with one shot each of 10mm. I like it better than .45 for hogs.
My S&W 1006 10mm in SS would be my choice. It can get the job done. I would prefer not to use a 9 mm or a 40 cal.
Why an auto?
My favorite hog gun in thick stuff is a super red in .44.
I saw a 34 (mostly large) hogs at the same time last weekend at the lease just across the fence from our property. I have seen large numbers of them at one time on my game camera too...so I know there are some huge groups of them around. Too many to count them all on the pics and only can get so many in the frame at one time. I prefer a powerful hi-cap semi auto like a glock 20 (with a spare mag) over a 5 or 6rd wheelgun...even if it's in 44mag or the like. Personal preference I guess...
