Hello,

I'm just getting into hunting and am looking for some advice for a climbing stand. We are hog hunting on public land and I have been using a friends ladder stand that are left up year round. The stands are about 2 miles up off an old logging road from the parking area.

I was talking to my friend and asking why on the hike out to the stands we always pass areas that seemingly look like a better spot to hunt from and was told that we don't use those to keep the stands hidden.

So, because the ladder stands are in a management area the stands are hidden and are generally in areas that may be good, but may not be the best. And I was thinking that if I used a climbing stand I could start hunting in some better spots and increase my chances of getting a hog.

So what do ya'll recommend? I'd like to spend less than $150. Hunting is a new sport for me and I don't want to go investing a ton of money all at once.

I'd save up a few more dollars and get a summit viper sd. Light, easily transported, easy to setup and super quiet. Plus it pretty comfortable. I have two and they are the best climber for the dollar you can buy.

Any one of the Summit stands are great stands. I have one of the Summit Goliath stands and just love it. Very easy to use and reliable.

what kind of terrain, an land scape? climbing stands ya need, tree with no branches in the way ta get to the hieght ya want... chain on stands, like the ones with the wratchet type, ya can put them up an use the branches ta conseal your self, they usualy cheaper, an ya can pick up some stick ladder, an if ya get a hog or deer, ya can use them ta help drag out, old indain trick.... have gotten several hog's over 2 mile's back in WMA land, it is pain in butt, getting them out... thar tis easier ways, tis were an ATV sure helps... got 4 last year three wer mile or more back in...

I bought a used API...its best, positive placement on the tree because of a plastic wrapped motorcycle chain.

The wire/cable tree diameter adjusters can get scary while climbing, there is alot of droup when placing weight on the frame when going up.

loggy bayu are something like that has the best locks for the adjustment for the cable..some tree's get small quick and need a couple of shortings on the cable ect. around the tree,

Taking the cable locks loose to thighten adjustment 15 feet off the ground can get scary.

I'd go with aluminum.

edit; the best advise is to make sure the top is tied to the bottom...imagine the bottom part going to the ground...A friend was hanging from the arm pits on the top section just because the tie strap was adjusted too long.
he had to let go and bring the bottom back up...the look on his face when I told him to fall back to the bottom and bring it back up.

one of the trick's i use is, starting both the bottom an top at sharp angles, rasing the top to as high as ya can reach up, an off ta side a bit, an pulling myself up... as ya climb higher, it leavels out... just takes some time an practice.... main thing is safty...

After this thread, I went and bought a ladder stand from the local Dick's Sporting Goods. It's their Comfort Zone 16' Lookout Deluxe with Flip Up Bench Seat Ladder Stand and was on sale for 70 bucks. I figure for 70 bucks I can afford to leave it hanging.

Ladders are nice when hunting your own property, until you climb up to the top and find a friggin' bobcat sitting there looking at you all pissed off....
