Going on my first hog hunt with some friends.
What gear do I need?
We will be out there for a out three nights, and I have not been camping in a while. (real camping)
Also will I need some ballistic tip ammo, or will reg fmjs work?
I use 55 gr. FMJ.

If your near your car bring everything possible, If your woods camping just bring what makes you comforatable & meds like chap stick clean socks ect. Just prepair for any pain you had in the last 6 months, headack, foot rot. dri eyes. butt chafe...lol like when ya wipe with leaves and it gets bad the second day...
One rule as far as gear I use that if it don't have 2 uses don't bring it
I use 5 layers (polister, merano-wool, and under armor) with the 5th rain proof , I mix and match them as needed and would reuse the second out.
Just think of what you might need to stay out there as far as food snacks & drink. hunting/stalking burns alot of calories..more then setting back.
Just be smart..ya don't have to he-man..like running thru water, go around it.
I just can't say enough about being comforatable...you have a problem the first day it gets bad by the 3rd.

FMJ's are cool if your in the woods and there isn't livestock around, using a bullet that expands/blows up is my choice in any caliber.
Where are ya'll going...mountains, swamp? Sounds like a cool trip..I'd like to read a up-date afterwards.

should I use a heavy expanding bullet or 55 gr ballistic tip?
Ill try get lots of pics :)
We use 60 gr. V-max ONLY..hand rolled, 55 gr prolly not much difference.
If you get one running at you its best to step out the way...If you don't put another round in it it don't matter what rifle...bullet your using.
Hornady is know for tuff bullet construction...being so I guess the v-max goes a few inches then frags..causing alot of damage, therfore faster death.
Good luck...I'll be looking for pics.
This is the biggest 5.56 kill of mine....A scale weighed 251 pounds . Shot placement is foremost if you have the time.

I only use 55gr v-max out of the bolt gun because they're super accurate and it's killed a bunch without any issues.
For the ARs I just use plain old 55gr FMJ.
I've seen FMJ's that have flatten and tumbled causing more internal damage than can be believed..deer shot straigh on and 4 broke ribs on the left and 3 on the right, nothing left of the heart & lungs ripped.
Stray bullets are a big concern for us...and FMJ's are just too easy, gotta hand load.

Believe me, FMJ will get the job done but that being said, the v-max is better.
I have never lost a single hog or any other animal using it. Granted I only use it in a really accurate bolt gun but I've never lost an animal that I know I hit. It's possible that I lost a big hog using it a few weeks back but I wasn't 100% sure I hit it and I didn't spend any time looking for it either. Everything I've hit with it looks like a grenade went off inside with massive damage.
If it didn't cost 5X as much as FMJ then I'd use it exclusively. I'm not broke but at about $1.50/rd and the amount of lead we throw down range that can add up pretty damn quick.

Have about 40 rds from my old pd and can't use it for the one I work for now so I might as well use it
Do hogs always travel in packs?
have taken a few with 55gr fmj... got some 55gr hp an gonna try them out on hog's... my shot's are taken at close range... shot placement is critical with smaller rounds...

No.
Sows and younger ones will usually be in a pack but boars will often travel alone. That's not to say that you won't find big boars in a pack because you will but 99% of the time if you see a hog out somewhere by itself it's gonna be a boar.
How about .357 on pigs? I got a Marlin carbine but also have my .223 with some Mk 262. I have a chance to go after some feral pigs but cant decide.

In brush, up close and personal it's a good gun. But the hit power, accuracy all drop out past 25yds, so I prefer a rifle. I have taken a lot of hogs, and I prefer a big bullet. I don't like dealing with them when they are wounded in heavy brush. As was said, shot placement is key with any round, especially so with a small bullet like a 223 or even a pistol like a 357. Use GOOD bullets. For pistols, I am partial to Federal Hydra Shoks. They WORK. I would spring for TSX ammo for a 223. It's a small bullet, so use the best one available.
Also; I am headed to Pasadena Tx this weekend to visit my GF. Does anyone have any access to a ranch where we can try our luck on a hog hunt? I am experienced hunting pigs, we just have not had enough time to find places in the area. The only ranches I have any access to are way down beyond Corpus Christi and out past Pleasanton. Please give me a heads up if you can help us out!!! I'll drive a good 3 hrs from Houston for a place to hit them up. I will be in town Fri thru Sun. Thanks, Paul.
