So I got my new predatar 556 today. I put a redfield 3x9 scope on it until I can buy a nice 1 x6 type scope.

I start at 50 yards. I get it dialed in to about 1 inch high. I move back to 100 yards and it is 10 inches high! So if I sight it in at 100 will be be on inside 100 yards?

Thanks for your help

You want it dead on at 50 meters/yards. It will still be high at 100, but not that much, and it will cross again on it's way down at 200/225. You can start with it about 1.1/1.2" low at 25 too.

ETA: When a bullet leaves the barrel it starts to drop so the barrel has to be tilted up and the bullet will travel in a arc. You want to sight in for the best arc for that type of firearm. For a AR type firearm in 5.56 Nato, IMO, a 50meter zero gives you the best bang for the buck. You can still hit COM on a man sized target at 350/400 meters by aiming at the neck area. With iron sights it's the apple on a stick hold at that distance.

I came across something similar about a week ago. How easily we sometimes forget...

I always confirm my zero at 25m before starting a range session, it's just my habit / ritual. Once that was done, I moved the target and stand out to 100m. I was using the white side of a cardboard IPSC (sp?) silhouette, so I could see POIs more easily. I also had my binos handy, since I didn't feel like walking down after every 5 shots.

I took aim at the same POA as I had at 25m (hint: this is a no-no ). Fired 5 shots, and strangely, I couldn't find any POIs on the target.

WTF???

Then I facepalmed myself when I remembered, that at 100m, the bullet is still RISING, so I dropped my POA down to the pelvic girdle equivalent, and lo and behold, more holes started appearing near CoM.
