Can I remove the piston bushing if I decide I don't want to run the AA system?

I'd like to try the system out, but if I don't like it for whatever reason, can I knock the receiver bushing out and remove the kit?

Or have I made a permanent mod to my upper?

I was told by AA that it wouldn't be necessary to remove the bushing to return to a normal configuration.

what is the life expectancy of the bushing?

I would expect the bushing to last as long as the upper since it is simply a non-weight bearing guide.

It's stainless steel and pretty solid. I'd expect it to last as long as any other parts in an AR.

This is correct.

I put my DI tube in the bushing and it fit perfectly.

For many reasons which you are soon to find out I don't think you will be going back to DI gas. I was amazed at how much the felt recoil was reduced and um that one fact of not have to do much cleaning!

What about switching to a new upper receiver? Is it easy to transfer that bushing?

I suppose it could be removed and reused but it would be much easier, and maybe more practical, to just get a new bushing from AA.

Would get a new bushing from AA, keep the old one installed. The bushing can be removed, but there really is no need. Milspec uppers have the clover leaf hole pattern for venting excess gas and water from the upper. Also solves misalignment issues with off spec gas tubes and carrier keys. Unless your using a can on the old upper with DI I wouldnt take it out. Shoot JIM a PM or order from the website, or if your buying a new upper check out the one from AA that does not require the bushing.

Hope this helps,

Good luck getting that bushing out. You're better off with another upper if you want to run DI.

AA says the bushing can be removed but trust me nothing short of a press will remove it.

You don' need a press to install it, don't need one to remove it.

This is a link on page two asking the same question.

Have you ever tried? I have. That's why I posted my response.

If you want to get it out without damaging your upper receiver you will need to press it out.

I haven't actually tried it. If I were to however, I would get a flat blade screwdriver, or other flat metal and grind it so it would fit into the cross slots on the receiver, and wack that with a hammer.

I had to tap mine in, so tap it out it is.

For those who had to add a bit of locktite, since yours slid in loose, lighter taps to get it out once you "broke" the hold of the lock tite.

IF you had to pound it in, then pounding it out is needed.

As mentioned earlier, you can go back to DI without removing the bushing.

The DI tube fits THROUGH the bushing hole.

I didn't try it before I started this thread.

That's good to know. At least now I know I have a billet upper laying around that I can use.
