What flash hider to get 14" barrel to legal 16"?

I have a post ban barrel that was cut to 14" and threaded. I don't know why 14" (compared to 14.5") as it isn't the standard. What flash hider will get me to the legal 16" length? Since the threads account for 1/2", the YHM Phantom won't be long enough. I know that the Noveske KX3 and the fake XM 5.5" replicas flash hiders will get it the legal length. But, the Noveske won't really be needed on a 14" barrel and I'd hate to add a fake anything to my gun. Is there another that I am missing? I need one that is 2.5" or longer. Thanks for your help.

The Krink break fits the ticket

It would really be going to waste on a 14" IMHO

twonami:

Thanks for the help, but that looks like a 14.5" barrel compared to my 14" one. If that is the Bushmaster 'Izzy' flash hider, it is just a hair short at 2 3/16" length. If it was 2 1/2", it would be perfect.

Another Option

This brake is 4.5" long from the factory.

If you were to cut-off the ports near the muzzle it would be 3 1/8"

Or, cut-off two inches from the muzzle and you've got your 2 1/2" hider.

I found a solution that I think I am going to use. I bought a 1/2x28 to 24mm adaptor from ADCO Firearms. It is intended to use the original Bulgarian KFH on an AR-15 thread pattern barrel. I am going to use a Bulgarian 24mm AK flash hider instead of the KFH since it isn't need on a 14" barrel. Hopefully it will create a unquie look that will work well and solve my length problem. I already have a few of the Bulgarian 24mm flash hiders on various AK rifles and it seems to work effectivey on 5.45 & 5.56 AKs.

I will be mounting a rifle length free float railed handguard on the upper. I found a used Larue and am waiting to hear back from the guy selling it. I will post pictures when I get it all together.

How are you measuring the length? Proper way is with a closed bolt. Insert bore rod to bolt face. Add masking tape at the end of the barrel. Measure rod length to tape.

I am measuring exactly as you describe and I get 14" without a muzzle attachment. With a YHM Phantom, I get a rough measurement of 15.7". The upper was supposed to be a factory no-ban 14.5" upper, but what I got was chopped up post-ban upper. The work is well done, they just measured incorrectly. I am just looking for a legal configuration for this barrel without making it NFA or a pistol.

I traded into this upper and didn't do the work myself. So this time the shoddy work isn't mine (all the other shoddy stuff in my collection is). I am positive whoever did it, measured it incorrectly. They measured the total overall length of the barrel at 14.5", including the barrel extension/bolt locking lugs. They did not measure 14.5" from the closed bolt, so the actual barrel measurement comes out to 14" total. It is always the details that get you.

Unfortunely, all the various flash hider as designed around a 14.5" barrel. The Smith Vortex & YHM Phantom for example, is approx. 2.25". Since about .5" is threaded, it isn't long enough to get a 14" barrel to 16". It ends up at roughly 15.5-15.75" long. I also don't think that .25" of threads is enough to hold it on, so I don't want to put a spacer in the threads.

There is a fella on this board that makes or sells a slightly longer A2 FS. If this post gets a bit more visibility he may pipe in about the actual length.

Yep, I'd give Kurt a call and tell him your problem. I'm sure he couldmake a Kortex flash supressor to the appropriate length.

Wait a sec... are all Bushmaster M4 carbine's permanently welded? I was going to put a Vortex on mine, but if it's stuck on there I guess that's out the window.

They are permanently 'attached' not 'welded'.

Yes you can swap over to a Vortex - your current FS will be destroyed in the process, and the new one will need to be drilled. blind pinned and welded over when it's installed.
