 601 build barrel question

Hello all,
I have an NDS 601 and 604 lower and upper on the way for a 601 build. Can you tell me if this barrel would work for this project? High Standard 20" A1 Light contour from Brownells?

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=24252/Product/BARREL-ASSEMBLY-20-W-FRONT-SIGHT-BASE

Thanks for your help.

No, you MUST find an original Winchester barrel, or you will burn!!

Just kidding. I don't see why it wouldn't work, and as long as you're happy with it, you're good to go.
I personally have no experience with these barrels, so someone else will have to help you on that.

Good luck on your build, and be sure to keep us posted on your progress, with many pics and much info.

ETA pt 2: I just noticed that the barrel is .750 at the FSB on, which will present a problem if you are going for the correct look. You will want to look for a barrel that is .625 the entire length.

Thanks M1A1. Yes, the .750 is a problem, and I see now it is 1:9, I would want 1:12 since 1:14 seems to be impossible. Back to the drawing board. Has anyone here used Green Mountain barrels?

What's your budget? There are some Colt C MP C barrels on the EE right now for $255-$275. Not an early barrel, but it's Colt and 1:12, dating from the late '60's.

The discription says A1 light, but the pic is of a regular gov profile barrel. I go by HS every now and then, the owner is a retro buff and I have seen some A1 contour barrels in 6.5. I have pesterd him about getting A1 profile barrels. It might be that the pic is wrong

While the .750 would definitely affect my decision whether to use a particular barrel for a 601 repro, I personally wouldn't hesitate to use a 1-9 twist since it can't be seen (except on the barrel stamp).
Unless you find an original 1-14 or very early 1-12 barrel, it's not going to be "real"––the markings will be wrong, no matter what you do.
If I was gonna use a later barrel, I'd use one that "looks right" (.650) but gives me the advantage of a newer tube. 1-9 is (in my opinion) a better all-around twist.
Just a thought, anyway.

The earliest 1-14 barrels are actually slightly thinner than the 1-12's, incidentally. I mean, if you really want to get picky!

...just noticed your low post count. Welcome to the insanity!

As stated above anything you use besides a correct one will basically be the same in my opinion. Not authentic correct but visually correct. Advantage to some of the in the white barrels is you can stamp on them what you want before finishing/coating if that detail oriented. Colt pencil would be the closest for clone and a Chrome Bore would work for arsenal refurbish look which was actually pretty common place for the 601 model. I see more refurbished 601 upper receivers than I see authentic original if that matters. Could always have the lower Anniston Depot stamped for that real authentic refurbish look until and if you could find that special very hard to find barrel. Heck I'm thinking about doing something like this myself but with a 602.

All the Colt pencil barrels are a hoot to shoot in my opinion but faster twist rates do open up a lot more ammo options. It's yours get what you want and High Standard is quality stuff.

Thanks Olgunner, insanity indeed. I bought an AR a while back that is all 604 except for a CMMG new lower, and between shooting that and reading this forum I am hooked.

IM going green mountain for my 603.and anything else I build really.
20" pencil USGI profile and the price is reasonable.
My 601 has a late 60s colt sp1 barrel. It has late colt marking on it, but that's ok.
They are right unless you find a real 601 barrel, I think they were made by Winchester,
Would you want to shoot it anyway?

I Everyone has different ideas about how correct their builds should be. My 601 replica has an MP ('66 - '68) barrel, after all. However, I think I would draw the line at a .750 under the FSB barrel. I built an XM177e1 with a big under the FSB barrel a few years ago, and it bothered me so much that I eventually disassembled it and sold the barrel. And I'm usually not anal about things. Betcha can't tell it's an MP barrel from this pic:

Yes definitely will shoot it.

For the Green Mountain barrel, that would need the FSB mounted and then it is good to go. Do I have that right?

Yes sir, with a g. Mountain you will have to mount a fsb.
They pop up on EE all the time , or a new from anywhere.
For a 601, you might have to have re profiled to get it close . As a real
One is very very hard to find.
I have a colt fsb from a sp1 on mine that needs to be re profiled .
One of these days

Sorry I was typing and driving and missed a few words.
I meant front sight bases pop up on EE all the time.or you can buy them new from any supplier.
Also to get it closer to the look of a 601 you could have the fsb re profiled .

IIRC there was an original Winchester 1:14 601 barrel that sold on GB last year for well over $1k. It was in nice shape too. Maybe it was 2 years ago. Wouldnt suprise me if someone here snagged it. Anyhow, there were some serious drooling going on in the GB forums....

I have started collecting a few parts. NDS upper and lower, Sarco stock parts. I have ordered a DPMS LPK. Went ahead and ordered the NDS upper as I was ordering the lower, did not understand if the pin would work. Turns out it does, so I have an extra upper as trade goods. Biggest challenge looks like a barrel.

Of course, you,ll have to reprofile the upper and the lower (Hard decision to make on new Nodak parts) then get some color back on them.

If that was the one that came out of the police arsenal, and was on gunbroker around early summertime I was in a bidding war with the auction winner for it. :( rough battle but his or her pockets were deeper then mine.

Gordog what is reprofile please?
gordog  [Member]
3/4/2012 5:10:23 PM
Hey Fred, Here is a more close-up pic to explain "re-profile" The 604 upper has to have the sight arrow ground off, the flashing under the handle has to be smoothed out, and if you look really close,,,, where the upper and the lower meet (just below the left side of the port door) have to line up. All of this if you want it to me more nitpickn correct for the 601. Yell if you need anything else. And, Yes, i used the same upper and lower that you have, (both Nodak) the part of the upper (just above the charging handle) should have these angles cut.

Thanks Gordog. Looking around further for barrels, it seems only Green Mountain is producing a 1:12 in an A1 profile. With the drying up of A1 parts kits, one would think that someone would start offering these. And a 1:14.

An outfit called AR15Hardware had 1 in 9 lightweight barrels for sale too. Advertised as non chromed bore or chamber. Looks like M4 ramps though.

http://www.shop.ar15hardware.com/20-M16A1-556-Light-weight-barrel-cit20lwt556cm.htm

I bought one, but it is packed away right now. I posted a review some time ago.

Cheaper than the GMs. But the GM is 1 in 20 twist and heavily chromed chamber and bore.

Were can a Green Mountain 1:12 A1 barrel be ordered from? Every time I look, it says :See your local Dealer". i haven't had any luck with those on their list. Thanks for any help on this.

The local dealer is a challenge - the closest to me is a three hour round trip. Appears to be someone working out of a home shop. I emailed that dealer asking him for a price to ship and how to pay him, I will report the response. If that does not work I will call Green Mountain.

http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/ContactUs - Fill out the form and submit. They will probably reply early in the week. Or call one of the numbers.

I took this route and placed a back-order for one of the 20" LW barrels about a year ago. They e-mailed me when they started filling the back orders a bit later, and shipped my barrel out pretty quick. No idea why they haven't got more info about ordering direct on the website yet.

Good luck

That is great news thanks for the heads up.

Was the barrel for a retro build? How did it work out for you?

Well, like I said, they were filling back-orders first. This was back in July. The barrel looks good. I got one of the GM barrels, and one of the AR15hardware barrels. have not installed either yet.

One is for a 601 clone, and the other will probably be a 605. The 601 will likely get the 1/12 GM, even though it has mucho chrome in the bore and chamber. I have changed my mind more then once though. Just need to get someone lined up to do the work and move on.
