Did CAR-15's or XM-177's ever have handguards without heat shields?

If they originally did not have heatshields, any idea when Colt started putting heatshields into the CAR-15/ XM-177 handguards?

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.

Far as I know, they've been in there from the beginning. Even the earliest (production) 601 handguards had heat shields, so I can't imagine they ever would of left them out.

I have seen rifle and carbine handguards without them, but not Colt or any other military contractor.
