Tap & Die
Anyone ever seen a Tap or Die for barrel nut, receiver, or buffer tube?
What size am I looking for, & are they easily obtainable?

I have the Tap for the buffer tube & tried it on the barrel nut.
But the barrel nut is larger.
Reason I ask is my Barrel nut is USGI used & abused, it goes on fairly easy until quarter inch from flush against the receiver.
Upon removing the nut I noticed a few small burrs about half way into the threads.
Should I just work it back & forth till the barrel nut turns freely?
This is surplus A2 Colt upper in the Gray so I hate to ruin it.
Probably going to be cheaper and easier to just buy a new barrel nut should be less than $10.00, don't do something to mess up your receiver.
I'd hate to see you ruin a nice grey upper, too. Consider removing the FSB, and replacing that BBL nut.
If you do decide to "work it back and forth", it will probably be fine to shoot, but you will probably have to leave them together forever.
I'd see about getting a new BBL nut, me.

I wish I still had my demilled upper.
I would have sent it to you so you didn't mess up a nice upper.
Perhaps you can find one cheap on GB.
That or replace the barrel nut.
Can you get the FSB off easily?
Let me know if you need to borrow my
Front Sight Bench Block.

Sorry

should have clarified there is no barrel, it's everything but the port cover & it has some some funky scope mount.
Tex, it's the one I sent you a pic of via Cell Phone, my $50 find while surfing GB at 3AM.
I'm doing a budget build so I found the cheapest BN I could find ($2.95 off GB)
I've a pencil barrel laying around with the nut assembly intact, so, I may use that barrel until funds become available for a proper A2.
Bargain Bin Black Rifle

Yeah, good deal on the upper.
Don't mess it up on the barrel nut.
Make sure the nut and the receiver are very clean.
Drop the nut into some Dawn or Palmolive water and get any grit and grime off it, especially if it is used.
Then put some moly grease on the nut and see if that helps it go on.
Coffee's brewing & the bowl of warm water & dawn is on the table.
gee, most people have the news paper with there morning coffee, guess where not most people

Take a wire brush and work it over the burrs first, see if you can knock them down some. Use some oil on it when you do. Maybe even use a metal pick or emory file on them to try and get them out.
