Best, Low Profile, Scope for an A2?

I loooove the old colt scopes. They mount perfectly low profile on the carry handle for me. It's not even a strain for me to look through it. My question is which modern scope (and mount if applicable) will mount as low as the old colt scope and still be a decent high quality scope? I'd like something that I could co witness the iron sights with if possible like the old colt too.

I think you might have to bite the bullet and buy an old Colt scope. I beat myself up with the same question a while ago. I bought an NcStar. The lenses were super clear, but the P4 reticle was too big for such a small tube. The clicks on the adjustment knobs were almost non existent. I sold it and now use irons. I think all the Colt "clones" are Chicom junk too. You could go with a small scope, rings, and mount. Stay away from CAA and any other Chinese POS mounts. I had one and it was so cocked to the left that I threw it out. Good luck..........

How can you co-witness with a scope that is above the iron sight plane and uses a mount that allows you to look through it in order to use the irons?

With that said, look around and see if you can find a 4x Burris Timberline. They are out of production, but fine scopes for your application.

ACOG or compact ACOG

I wouldn't be surprised if the Burris 332 or the Sig compact scope or the Primary Arms 3x compact scope could mount as well. The bases all look similar to the ACOG. The Sig is under 150 bucks.

Easy the mount is hollow and allowes you to peer through it. Next time you see an old colt scope at a gunshow, check it out!

For those who are saying acogt. How high up does it mount and what mount do you use to use it that will give you a low profile view like the colt scope?

All ACOGs have a base designed to fit in the carry handle of an AR and allow see-through irons. Some ACOGs are specifically designed for carry handle mounting in that their reticle ballistic drop graduations are calibrated for that height over bore. If you like the old Colt scope, you will like the ACOGs but only about a billion times more. If you have never seen one in real life, I suggest you do.

Which ACOGs in particular would you recommend for the A2?

Blain, that is NOT co-witness. I've used old Colt scopes. The Compact ACOG's are small and do not take up a lot of space.

The reason I mentioned the Burris is because I have found that most of the guys who want to scope the A1/A2 do not want to spend the $800 + for an ACOG.

I have a TA33, but it's on my carbine. It does have the ability to mount on the carry handle, but I have not shot it on my A2. I would think this is a great option for the same reasons it was on the carbine... it's small, perfectly clear glass with BDC, you can shoot with both eyes open, allows focus on objects much closer to you than the 4x ACOGs and it's pretty much bullet proof. It is only 3x compared to the original colt which I believe was 4x. I love mine. It does have the hole to allow using the irons as well as the sight. If I put a scope on my A2, I'd likely get another TA33...

Gotcha. What reticule do you have on it? The horseshoe?

the burris 322 is a carry handle mount on an acog type base . it dont cost as much as an acog and it is nothing like an acog . I have both. I got the burris when they first come out and have mounted it on several different rifles and I suppose to address mounting to a carry handle is the issue I had it on a carbine and mounted it on a detachable carry handle just to find out and it mounts up similar to the old colt except it has a hex head bolt that goes through the hole. it in my opinion is a medium range optic , but I can say it functioned quit well and I have no issues.
I got it for 252.00

hope this helps.

I have a chevron... i think the chevron might be a little more accurate because its smaller, but i think the horseshoe would do close quarters stuff better because it's a little larger. i dont think you can go wrong with either... or any of the colors. From what ive seen, the chevron models are usually cheaper.

A Colt 4X is what I deployed with to Macedonia back in 1993. We didn't have very many options back then. By default, the only one in the Platoon with an optic, I got to be DM... The BDC was for M193, we carried M855 for our A2s so I had to do some math. Other than range use, I never had to pull the trigger on anybody.

My ACOG is not technically mounted on an A2, but it is mounted on the carry handle of my 20" PSA upper. I think its a fantastic set up that allows for the use of the iron sights and the scope. Yes, Compact ACOGs are expensive. I got my 47-2 on clearance for $599 NIB at a police supply store. I probably wouldn't have considered it before, given the usual price. After trying the Compact ACOG I can tell you they are worth the usual selling price. Its my favorite optic. Here is a pic:

For compact scopes that don't cost a fortune, these would work well:
Leupold 1-4x shotgun/muzzle loader
Weaver Classic 1-3x

I'm using a Smith Enterprise carry handle mount with IOR STANAG V-Tac rings. The rings I've come across recently, but the mount has been on there for 15 years.

Having been an owner of both a second generation Colt scope and an ACOG; I would defiantly save for however long it takes and get the ACOG. The Colt scope was good for its time, but that was the 70s. It’s eye relief was intended for the A1 or collapsible stocked carbines. On an A2, well you had better have a long neck. The ACOG was designed for the carrying handle and the sight is painless to use.

I bought my TA01 10 years ago and I have never regretted it. There is a saying with optics whether camera or scopes; Buy once, cry once.
