Black Hills 75 grain - sand in meplat?

I just received an order of Black Hills .223 Red Box 75 grain match ammo, and I am noticing that there is a small pebble lodged in the meplat of the majority of the rounds. These rounds have the Hornady projectile. Some of the pebbles protrude enough so that I can pry them out; others are too deep or too small to get out. Has anyone else experienced this issue with BH red box and OTM rounds? What will this do to terminal performance?

tumbler media

Why would there be tumbler media in the meplats of the projectiles, especially in red box (i.e. not remanufactured) ammo? I don't see why the projectiles would ever come in contact with tumbler media. I have never seen this issue in any other OTM round.

bullets are tumbled after manufacture. I've seen it a few times

eta: since BHA isn't making their own bullets, they may actually purchase them "dirty" at a lower price and do it themselves

The loaded rounds, or projectiles themselves, are tumbled clean during the manufacturing process. It's common, normal, and wont effect accuracy. Both the Red Box and Blue Box Black Hills ammo has had this, in my experience.

I have Hornady HAP 9mm JHP bullets that have tumbler media in a few of the HP's... right from a fresh box, from Hornady. I've also seen Nolser HP's with media in them.

If it really bothers you... get out a straight pin and get to work.

this... BH polishes the loaded cartridges before packaging...

i've seen this a lot more in red box than blue box, not sure if they are just trying to pretty up their "new" ammo or what. it's never caused me any issues functional or otherwise (ie: accuracy)

Hmm, the little pebble can't be good for BC. Effectively the pebbles destroy the meplat consistency. I know from my experience trimming the meplats on .338 300 grain Berger hybrids that small changes make a BIG difference.

I had the same thing with some BH ammo a few years ago. It was tumbling media.

I contacted BH, they said it was normal and would not affect accuracy or performance. They even offered to send me a new box of ammo if I was concerned.

I declined their offer and shot it without ill effect.

I doubt you are shooting these in a rifle similar to your .338... nor at the distances involved. Call Black Hills..... see what they say. I stand by my statement.

Might it have SOME effect? Sure.... but 99% of people wont be able to shoot the difference on paper at the range... let alone in field conditions.

yeah in a bolt gun maybe, and only at extended range.

You're getting worked up over nothing, considering what happens to the bullet as it get form the mag to the bore. You will not notice it in the AR
