.223 Hornady Steel Match Question
Has anyone used 52gr Hornady Steel Match? I see everyone selling it, but its not listed on the Hornady website. They don't even list a 52gr HP bullet. Has anyone ever measured the velocity?
Thanks!

I am asking the same question myself. My AR platform is a 17 inch match grade barrel (Lilja) in 223 wylde chamber.
I have been using Black Hills reloaded 55 and 69 grain HPBT rounds, great prices on the reloaded ammo.
But you can get 50 rounds of Hornady steel match in 52 and 75 grain bullets for $19.60 and $22.95.
I picked up 2 cases ( 500 per case ) of Hornaday 75gr #9760EL Steel Case Practice which uses the T1 bullet at a Fun Show for $341.99 plus $10.00 to get in. They are selling single boxes for $15.97. As for accuracy I'm getting under a in. at 100 yds all day long. But I did have a couple FTF's bad primers I'm guessing. But When the show comes back I'm planning on getting a least 2 more cases and hopefully more 4-6 but the depends on $$$
I had my first stuck case in a long time, using the 52gr Steel Match load in a BCM 5.56mm chamber. Gun was clean (less than 50 rounds fired), and oddly enough the case the stuck was an UNFIRED round. I had to mortar the gun to get the round out. No obvious defects, and chambered and fired fine the second time.
YMMV... I reload for a reason.

$0.352/rd ain't bad at all for 75gr OTM ammo. Ima have to look for that.
I'm paying just over $0.50 for PRVI 75gr OTM.
Well, I took the plunge and purchased a box of 52gr steel match at my local gun store. My rifle shot all 20 rounds fine and I was grouping about a 1/2" at 50 yards with a chrome lined barrel. This ammo has grouped better than anything I've tried before. The price is right, so I might buy some more. It's accurate ammo, but I am nervous about all the problems others have had lately with Hornady.

Have not seen or heard of any 52gr Hornady Steel Match ammo but love the 55 and 75gr Steel match as my RRA 1-8 shoots it very well. Have shot ragged 1 hole groups with the 55gr at 100yds and 3/4in groups with the 75gr at 200yds with less then 1in of deviation in impact point as well. Love the stuff and the price, have not worried about reloading since I started shooting it and not having to worry about chasing brass around is really nice. The 75gr load is potent hog medicine as well.
My dad picked up two boxes for us to use. We'll see how it works.
Edit: I misspoke. I meant two
cans. On top of that, the PMag fairy visted.

I don't know if "steel case practice" is the same product as "steel match" or not. I haven't seen anyone anywhere selling "steel match" under $20 per 50.
EDIT: SKU for 75gr Steel Match is 80261 , I would be interested in seeing a box of the ammo #9760el
I used to shoot a good bit of the Hornady 9760EL 75gr ammo when it was available as an LEO training supplement to the regular brass cased TAP line.
Lately (for the past year at least), I have not been able to find it. Maybe I'm not shopping in the right places or maybe it is out of production, I don't know. But I did discover the 75gr Steel match stuff and it seems roughly equivalent.
I did a comparison that included 9760EL and 75gr Steel match here. I can't say that there isn't a difference in the powder or something, I don't have a chronograph and I don't have any inside contacts at Hornady.
While I have Mk262 and 75gr Hornady rounds on hand that I purchased with with the intent for SD purposes, the point has become mute since barrier blind ammo has taken center stage and I am now considering Barnes TSX bullet loadings, Hornady GMX, and Speer GDSP ammo as my primary SD ammo selections.
I do like Hornady 75gr Steel Match for fun shooting, training, and plinking, since I am not a reloader.
Here is an picture of the Hornaday steel practice

They were selling that ammo for $15.97 a box. Did you get a discount?

No, thats the normal price I have been paying for the last year, then after getting to the range with it, I started buying cases, and hope 2 get 2-4 more at next show.

Interesting, I don't see any sign of it on the Hornady website .
It's on their law enforement site.

My chrome lined 1/7 16" barrel loves the 55grn. Shoots at or under MOA all day at 100 yards. Probably would do better with a higher powered scope (shooting a 1-4X right now). Until I run out it'll be the only ammo run through that gun. I paid $.37/rnd
