How do you keep track of what load is in what mag?
Getting to the point with mags that I have them charged with different loads. Some are easy to identify at a glance, others, like various SMK and other OTM loads not so easy. Does anyone use what I'm thinking of, a strip of scotch tape with a quick descrip written with a sharpie? Such as, "Q3314" or "PPI 75gr"? I can't imagine a piece of tape on the lower end of the mag would be obtrusive.
My eyes are getting too old to examine the tiny headstamps in a hurry..

Colored electric tape from Lowes. Like 5-6 little rolls.
30 Round Mags:
GI mags=commercial 223 55gr FMJ
Black P-Mags=M193 (LC & IMI)
FDE P-Mags=Barrier load (BH 5.56mm 50gr TSX)
Foliage Green P-Mags=M855 (IMI)
20 Round Mags
Black P-Mags=Mk262
FDE P-Mags=Hornady 55gr V-Max
I have a few empty mags that are relegated to range use, but what I have stored/stockpiled is as above
I just purchase one type of ammo 55gr fmj M193. problem solved.

That works fine for me too.
I also wrap a strip of 100 mph tape at the bottom of the mag with my house number on it so I don't lose the mag when around other shooters.
There is room to write other info like the loads or when the mag was loaded, etc.
Duct tape is cheap.
For mags I have stored I just write on them with a sharpie what's in them if its not M193.
I just look at the round ... M855 has a green tip. M193 is brass case, FMJ. Mk318 is brass case, open tip. Wolf is steel. Silver bear is silver.
It ain't rocket science
Now, if I started buying different rounds that looked the same, I'd be in a pickle and just use duct tape or something.
I too use the colored electrical tape. I have factory loads white, M855 green, standard 55 grain reloads no tape, 68 grain blue, 75 grain red.... all in 223.
I have one magazine that had green electrical tape around it.
That mag is full of MK318 and in my HD rifle.
The rest I look at the top round and know what its contains.
Easy. All of them loaded with 69 gr SMKs.
I currently use the white medical tape and write what is on it on each side of the mag. I was thinking of buying some white spray cans and spraying a dot on each side for ball ammo(855) and spraying a round shape figure (small of course) on each side for M193. Sounds like a weekend project.
Gray - 55
Black - 62
Tan - 77
OD - Special
FG - Reserve
Smoke - 300 BO
Feel free to rearrange.

For now or until I can buy a full supply of BH TSX
All my mags are loaded with MK262 except 2 mags that are loaded with Black Hills 5.56mm 50gr TSX
The 2 mags have blue tape on the bottom end
I also num,ber my mags

Using the different colored PMags are a great idea! Thanks!
Do you find it difficult to see colored tape in dark or low light conditions?
For me, I'm sticking with one weight as I'm a big fan of keeping it simple.

I use a P-Touch label maker, black type on white tape, and stick the label on the floorplate, with a little bit (3/8") of label tucked under to make a pull-tab for quick removal of the label.
3M brand colored electrical tape from Home Depot is what I use. It stays put and is available in several different colors.
White=75gr Hornady TAP
Red=55gr AE 223
Blue=Lake City M193
Green=Lake City M855
Etc etc etc…
My mags are also numbered with a silver or black Industrial Sharpie. Keeping track of them that way just plain works

Thanks for all the ideas! At this point (just starting out) I think I'll just dedicate certain mags to certain rounds and use a sharpie to designate what they contain. For now it's to tell the diff between various HD loads. BH smk / fed. smk / win. otm... etc. Those won't be used much at the range. Once I decide on xm193 or 855 loads my rifle likes best I'll get a nice little shitload of mags stuffed with that and know what I'm grabbing. I like the colored tape idea for for those.
At work I use dark earth P mags for barrier blind loads and black mags for standard 75 grain tap duty ammo.
Pat
The tape is the way. We use three types of ammo at work, 55gr FMJ, 62 grain Bonded, and the 64 grain SP by winchester, Why, cause the purchasing dept, buys what is cheapest..
I only mark my 62gr FMJ SS109/M855 mags with OD green stripe on them..
The rest of my mags are not marked an hold no-special ammo..
