I picked up a few OKAY ar15 mags. They have a grey finish and green followers. I'm looking at the finish and I see that it is extremely easy to get marked up... should i leave it be, or should i paint it or something.

thanks

It's a matter of personal preference. I'd leave them alone. If you're gunna spend time and money on paint, why not just use that cash to get more mags? Mags are intended to be disposable. As you use them, they're going to get worn...

I bought a large lot of new Okay 30 rounders on the EE a while back. Some have hardly any finish left on them now. Rather than refinishing them, I got a $0.99 sharpie to mark them with rack numbers and a heaping bag of grey magpul followers from the EE. Upgraded all of my mags from their green followers for the cost of what I would of spent on paint. Despite the finish, they all still feed flawlessly. And they have character

Heck...I've got some brownells 30 rounders I got from bravo Co. The finish is so worn on them, they are damn near all gold now...I'll never paint them

Do they function? I'd be 1000x more concerned with that than how they look.

well, they were suppose to be new when i bought them and I wasn't clear on if the finish should have been like that from the factory. Im not too concern on how it looks, I just wanted to know why different mags had different finishes (like if they had any function/design purpose)

It's perfectly normal for them to get scratched up from handling or even just being shipped in a box together. I wouldn't paint them, but if you decide that you absolutely must, mask off the top half that gets inserted into the magazine well so that they still drop free.

They probably just fall off the end of a conveyor into a bin. Kinda like Colt parts. lol! Doesn't hurt them. Okays are good mags. I put magpul followers in all mine too. Better than factory new.

Might be wrong about this but don't make mags for LMT?

Dunno. But for Colt and NHMTG they do.

All brand new Okay/Colt/NHMTG will have some insertion wear marks because they are all inserted into a receiver and QC fit/function tested before they leave the factory. I would leave them be. YMMV

This.

Add some Magpul followers and upgrade the springs and they should be the best mags ever.

OKAY makes mags for the government, Colt's, FN & NHMTG (Ronan Corp) as well as all the top AR manufacturers. Each aluminum box is hard coat anodized then a mil-spec dry lube finish is applied. This is not grey spray paint & you should not repaint the mags. Keep in mind these are mil-spec mags and are designed for single use. Also, the feed lips are 100% inspected on every mag made by OKAY. The inspection fixture leaves rub marks on the box & that is why new mags have a used look to the finish. In fact if you don't see the rub marks, then I would be concerned that the finish has been altered! How do I know all this...a very close friend of mine works at OKAY.

NOTE- All NHMTG mags manufactured since April 2010 have the latest Gen 3 Magpul anti-tilt followers

do they work for you? I bought two of those mags from a gun show and they both were crap! Fail to feed or double feed all the time. I took them to the next gun show and traded them both for one pmag.

I don't recommend repainting the finish

1911 xdm- I have never had a problem with OKAY/NHMTG mags. I would be leery of mags bought at a gun show, you never know where they came from.

They were in packaging so I thought they were gtg. the guy was selling them for $6 a peice so I thought I had nothing to lose. Since that Day I only use pmags in my rifles....

I've always had the best luck when buying from reputable gun shops & directly thru OE manufacturers.

Yep. As well as KAC and as others have said, NHMTG and Colt
