Is there any need for stainless steel mags in a world of polymer and aluminum?

This. It eats polycarbonate and aluminum. The only thing that keeps it from eating your rifle and magazines is that it likes high heat and humidity. But if it ever gets more robust and starts to spread, we're all hosed.

Stupid options on the poll, rather biased. What is your point?

I have some, seem fine, no big deal one way or the other. None issue.

Sorry you feel that way. I tried to be fair but perhaps a little provocative. I researched this issue through the search function and thought it hadn't been adequately discussed. Thanks for your opinion.

Steel doesn't bend and warp as easily as aluminum and doesn't become compromised in the presence of some commonly encountered chemicals (ex. DEET) like polymer.

When did polymer mags have problems with DEET? Never heard that? Most likely if it will destory a polymer mag it will have an effect on Al or Steel mags.
Metal is quite reactive to chemicals also.

I've never heard of a polymer that didn't have problems with DEET. DEET melts plastic; its a polymer solvent more or less. Doesn't do squat to metal. Theres manufacturers that claim their stuff is DEET resistant, but I wouldn't trust anything made of polymer to perform any load bearing function in an environment with prolonged exposure to the stuff. YMMV.

ETA: I'm not talking about the weak bugspray you get at CVS; I'm talking about hardcore junglebug 100% DEET.

This is from the Lancer web site:

The internal geometry of the Advanced Warfighter Magazine is a constant curve that has been maximized to feed the 5.56X45mm NATO round and has a non-tilting follower for trouble-free feeding. The feed lips are made from a single piece of precision formed steel that is hardened, then PTFE coated for corrosion resistance. The body and component materials are corrosion and chemical resistant, passing military chemical testing, including exposure to DEET.

To each his own. I just don't see any need for SS mags.

Just seems like a way to get the price up.

Started spring cleaning, and was boxing up a bunch of mags. I counted 14 CProducts 40 round SS and 5 C Products Defense 30 round SS mags, three AL 20's and a 43 Al 30s of mixed heritage, and 48 PMags. Of all of these, I'm using the C Products SS 30s almost exclusively. I like the PMags, but I prefer a metal magazine and the stainless steel work just fine.

I have the cprods 30 and 40 rounds mags and love them. have had zero issues, their 40's were/are the best.

Shittiest mags I've ever used. I had more failures using these than some really warped GI's. They were given to me for free, and they were thrown away by me.

I have a couple 20s, 30s, and 40s. They're my range mags and I've never had any problems. I can't see a reason to ever have to buy an AR magazine again though

Poll fail. All of the mags have their own uses.

Usgi great all around mag.

Pmag I use for my 300 blackout.

Stainless for when you need that little more length for accuracy.

If you are thinking about C Products stainless DONT. Copes has 10 D&H proven real deal mags with magpul followers for $85 shipped.

This is the silliest statement I've read yet. Stating that all polymers melt when in contact with DEET is like stating all metals rust. You couldn't be more incorrect . You should consult a qualified chemical engineer before posting misinformation like this.

I have a few, and have had no problems. With that said, I don't actively seek them out. USGI are generally what I buy unless there is a screaming deal on something else.

The AR-Stoner SS mags that Midway sells have never given me a problem. I love the things and just wish I'd bought more, especially the 20's, when they were still $11... $14 now.

The SS mags I bought from C-products (5.56X45 and 5.45X39 both work flawlessly. No issues at all.

I probably won't buy more though.

Since I bought those I've been buying either PMags or aluminum mags (GI surplus or GI new).

I only recall throwing away 2 mags in the entire time I have been shooting AR's (about 30 years now) and both were stainless steel mags. I would rather use aluminum GI mags with Magpul followers.
