Need recommendations for carbine tac light
I've been out of the AR light game for some time and have no idea what the current offerings are for tactical AR lights - specifically for use on a M4 style carbine. I'd prefer something that can accept a tape switch or rail mounted switch, but I'm open to ALL suggestions. Fire away...
I've looked at and tried many different ones, but lately have settled on the Surefire Scout series - either M300A or M600C. They are small and lightweight, but generate a metric cr*pload of light and are compatible with just about every mounting solution imaginable. Surefire makes a nifty rail mounted tapeswitch that goes with them and mounts directly to pic rails. On top of that, they are just about reliability bulletproof. Check out the weaponlights section of www.surefire.com under the scout light. You can get some good deals on them used at the EE here or new from forum vendors like Brightflashlights.
Have fun.
Had a Streamlight TLR-1 that I really liked, could use both tape switch or the lever to activate it. Sold it on a rifle tho awhile back. Prob get another when I have the chance.

I took a look and noticed the X300 as well. It seems to offer a smaller profile, lighter weight, brighter output, double battery life, and less cost. Am I missing something? Is this light not in the same class as the Scout?

No. The X series is a different design and platform. Slightly less light output than the M600C. Still a good performer, but I like the M300A and M600C the best
I'm partial to the Viking Tactics Mini-L4 (based on a Surefire E1B, manf'd by Surefire) in whatever mount you prefer. VLTOR E-Series, LaRue, or Impact Weapon Components, I do all three.
I've gone away from tape switches and prefer clicking on/off but you can use tape switches with the mini-L4/regular L4. If you're interested check out Brightflashlights.
Surefire Scout light is still the heat. In fact, I think I have one for sale with the tape switch in the EE ;) Seriously, though, they are some of the best weapon lights out there. Light weight, reliable, upgradable. I currently run an M600C with a KX2 200 lumen LED head with a clicky tailcap on a Haley Strategic mount. Other mounts are available, switches are available, and different heads are available. Lots of other weapon lights are out there, but nothing that offers the same weight, size, reliability, and versatility.

+1

How much do you want to spend? What do you plan on doing with the light and how many lumens do you need? But I would recommend a Surefire G2 LED or 6P LED, SF G2L or 6PL w/ Malkoff, Elzetta ZFL, SF VTAC mini L4, SF VTAC L4, or the SF Scout. Or maybe a pistol style light, like a Streamlight TLR-1 or Surefire X300.
However, since you want to run a tape switch, spring for a SF Scout M300A or M600C.
