Finished 1st AR
After much research and some help from here, I have nearly finished my first AR. The only thing missing at this point is a front sight and some optics in the future.
I started with the lower about a month ago and picked up the Complete upper today.
Here's what I have.
JD Machinetech Lower
PSA MOE LPK, home polished the trigger group per the sticky on this site
Bullet Button
Vltor Emod stock with buffer
JD Machintech Upper
JD Machinetech FF hand guard
Barrel Unkown make, 1/9 twist (can I determine maker by the markings?)
JD Machine Bolt (supposed to be full auto spec)
Troy Rear Flip BUIS
Currently debating on the front sight. Going to be Troy, but M4 or HK style, Flip up or fixed??? Leaning towards fixed HK style.
Here she is.

Flip-up means it's not ready to use when your optics goes down.
You have to flip it up, first, and you're already taking the time to flip your rear sight up.
Fixed means it's always an additional potential snag point, and rifles are already covered in snag points.
Decide on most likely usage, and plan accordingly.
Hand to hand combat, where seconds count, or leisurely transitioning from optics to sights at the range.
Or, you could get both, and swap them back and forth depending on your mood and prediction of local zombie infestation.
Me? I'd go with a flipper HK front, and just expect to keep 'em folded for transport and up when there's a mag in the well.
Other than that, you're going to have to start collecting mags by the bushel.
And a very pretty weapon it is.
Don't forget ammo! more important than mags although a front sight is necessary and a couple of mags but not a buttload.
Nice!
Thanks.
Now trying to decide on front sight.
Might try a Troy fixed HK style and hope that it lines up in the center. If not then go with a Troy Fixed M4 style.
Good looking rifle. I think you will like the HK style sights if you decide to go that way. I am a big fan of them.
Nice rifle, shame you have to ruin it with a bullet button to please your local government
Ive always been a fan of the HK sights
Thanks,
Picked up Troy folding HK style sight yesterday. Planning to go to the range this evening and zero it.
Had a weird dream last night that the Range manager wouldn't let me shoot it, claiming something was wrong with it. But then he proceeded to try and install a trigger group into a steel lower that was bent and he didn't know how to install the hammer spring. SO weird!!!!!!!
Nice rifle I vote HK front.
Pitty that rifle has to reside in the Western Communist block of Commifornia.
Went to the range tonight. Put 100 rounds through her. Everything ran nice and smooth. Maybe a little more recoil than I expected, but I've only shot 1 other AR, so my memory may not be right.
As far as zeroing, I only had to adjust one click for windage, but had to bring the front sight up about 7 from where it started.
Now, other than me being partly blind and realizing my left shoulder is still week from an injury last fall it shoots great, but I can't group for crap.
I guess it just means I need to spend more time shooting!
Also put 200 rounds through my P220 .45, so all told, 300 rounds fired tonight.

Just make sure the rail on the handguard/gasblock is truly on the same plain. I have heard that on a slightly lower plain (for the front sight) the sight post has to be raised a bit. negating the HKs faster "ring in ring" front sight. you find the ring then have to set it lower to have the post on mark. this is NOT at all an issue if everything is all plum.
Just my .02

Barrel Unkown make, 1/9 twist (can I determine maker by the markings?)
Probably. What are the markings?
Nice rifle BTW.
Ended up with Troy HK style flip up front site. Yes the guard and rail are the same height.
Barrel is marked ARD 5.56 x 45 1/9
I don't suspect that it's bad, everything I've heard about JD Machine is really good, I'm just curious, I suppose I could always just give them a call and ask, but what fun is that, with no Internet speculation or knowledge quiz.
