Ruger SR556 bolt stuck to the rear.
Shooting my brother-in-laws Ruger SR556 tonight and after about 25 rounds the rifle failed to feed. I pulled the bolt to the rear, dropped out the unfired round and when I went to drop the bolt nothing happened. It is locked back farther than bolt release latch. I can pull it back about 1/4 inch and that's it. Any clues on the cause and how to fix it? I'm thinking slowly take the collapsible stock off and see if I can get the bolt out that way.
Just a thought, have you tried slamming the butt on the ground, the same as you would if the bolt were stuck closed? I'm thinking if the carrier or bolt is canted, it may jar loose.
taking the stock off won't really help. rapping muzzle end on a flat padded surface may get it to go forward as well. maybe a scrap of brass or a blown primer in there making it stick
Have you taken off the buffer tube since the rifle was obtained new from a factory build, as possibly the buffer retaining detent has launched into the bolt carrier assembly?

I've tried hitting both the muzzle and butt end to jar it loose, but no luck. The buffer tube has been taken off in the past, not sure how long ago. If the retaining decent has come out is pulling the stock off the best way to access it?
Most likely the only way. If you pull the CH back is there any movement in the bolt?
You can send it to Ruger, as they have good customer service. Carefully try tapping the muzzle squarely on a forgiving surface like a plastic or wood block, it may free it enough forward. If this doesn't get it to budge, then you will most likely have to remove the buffer tube assembly, be careful in doing so and go slowly when unthreading it off of the receiver, as the buffer spring is compressed. Once you get the tube off, then you will be able to see what is binding the action from going forward.

Just FYI, the buffer retaining plunger had jumped up and jammed the bolt, got it apart and am replacing it. Thanks for the help!

Note that the front of receiver extension should be just about kissing the center post of the buffer retainer. If you find that the end of the tube when the butt stock is correctly indexed only barely sits on top of the outer flat of the buffer retainer, then the receiver extension will need to be mod'd/open end shortened so the tube can be spun in another turn to correctly retain the buffer retainer (read send the rig back to Ruger to have the receiver extension corrected or replaced so the rifle remains under warranty).
