When discussing a general purpose cleaner, particularly one that works to dissolve corrosive salts, user briansmithwins mentioned Simple Green Aerospace cleaner in
this thread. I couldn't find it locally so I checked Simple Green's website for other products that are safe for use on aluminum. They offer two products that are safe for aluminum - the aboved mentioned aerospace cleaner and Simple Green Pro HD.
Pro HD is purple and comes in a 1-gal jug, available at Home Depot. It's a concentrate, so I mixed some with 3 parts water. My first test was to use it on my CZ SP-01. I sprayed some in and on the barrel, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrubbed with a bore brush. The result was lots of carbon fouling coming out of the barrel and off the feed ramp. I sprayed a toothbrush with it and cleaned the dirt off the frame rails, slide rails, and breech face. I gave everything a quick coat of CLP, oiled her up, and she functioned fine. (BTW, the oil I used on the rails and barrel was a 50/50 mixture of ATF and 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil.)
I then soaked my AK bolt with it and swabbed the chamber with a Q-tip saturated with the Pro HD solution. After letting the bolt sit, I scrubbed with a toothbrush and the fouling came off. I sprayed a patch with it and ran it through the bore and it came it very dirty. Sprayed a brush with it, ran that through the bore, then ran some more patches through. A rag and some Pro HD also cleaned off the gas piston really well.
If you're looking for a general purpose carbon remover, I'd recommend giving it a try. I might mix the next batch a little weaker, to see how far I can stretch this stuff. You can also use it around the house, shop, and garage too.

Thanks for the information.
Have you used it on corrosive ammo? I'd like to know if it dissolves the salts well.

I don't shoot corrosive ammo but my guess is that it will since it's mostly water.
