WTK: Hungarian heavy ball (yellow tip) 54R
Anyone know anything about this ammo? It is 50's production. It seems the heavy ball is hard to come by these days. What would be a fair price for a can of 440? I have the opportunity to pick some up and would like more info on it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
good reliable ammo, make sure the can seal is good, or if it is open inspect the contents. worth $75-80 a can at current market, maybe a small premium since it is H/B, although in some way that detracts since it kicks like a mule and generally light ball is the preferred load
Some folks find the heavy ball to be more accurate in their rifles (usually the M-38 and M-44 for some reason) but IMHO the extra recoil is not worth it.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it! Too lazy to retype, this is from another forum that I post on:
I already agreed to get a crate from this guy and he has 1 more left. I am paying around market price for the ammo from what I have gathered. However, the only thing available by the crate on the "retail" market is the light ball. I am surprised there isn't more of a "perceived" value, based on responses from a few different forums. I just really like the punch the HB ammo has, fireball is nice too. I just think it is quite impressive out of a Mosin. If somebody hasn't shot HB ammo, they should! If you have only driven the Ford Mustang with the V6, you should really try the V8!
Also when I was at the pumpkin shoot, http://forum.saiga-1...mi/page__st__30 , Tom Cole of Cadiz had a semi auto Goryunov and those definately like the HB ammo. Currently not that many people have them and they are expensive, but I wouldn't be surprised if a forum business member here started making Goryunov receivers and the price came down . Parts kits are dirt cheap and if you are going to try and feed a belt fed, I think this would be the way to go
Does anyone think that this will become available for retail again?
Sure to see some more heavy ball eventually, however Its less desirable to most because added recoil in the mosin. might be fun to have for the guy who likes trying a lot of different ammo and some guns shoot the best with only certain types of ammo and this might be the one that is optimal for your gun. HB is very hard on the PSL/FPK semi autos and not recommended for use in these. Additionally a friend and client of mine who does the class 3 thing broke his PKMS running heavy ball, since switching to light ball it has not had any issues. In 2005-6 we bough the Hungarian yellow tip and yellow/silver by the shipping container and it was always good reliable ammo

That pretty much sums it up. Good synopsis!
