WTK: How to remove paint from Bakelite - DONE!

I just picked up a Tula Bakelite mag for my MAK off GB...

It seems that whoever had it before painted it black and i want to remove that paint but i am concerned about damaging the outside finish; what can I use to remove the paint without hamring the bakelite beneath? I am thinking Citistrip, but i have never used it before and since Bakelite is technically a resin, would something like this be harmful?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

A steel paint can and a gallon of mek.. Strip it and soak the body for about 10 minutes, clean any remaining paint with a paper towel with mek on it. Or redial if it's bad.

Citristrip from Home Depot. Works great.

Keep in mind that some collectors may desire the black paint to remain as the Russians to a degree and certainly the Polish and Bulgarians painted a great deal of their bakelite magazines black.

It's kind of rare to find a black painted Russian Tula 30rd bakelite magazine in 7.62mm that's painted black. Some of the magazine collectors would like such an example.

Well, got the mag today and stripped the paint off using Easy Off, folowed by a thorough WD40 bath...

The mag looked pretty rtaggedy and i could simply scratch the remaining paint off with my finger; the mag looked like it came out of that driveway in Russia and i felt sorry for it...

FOllower did not look too bad, a little light rust here and there, nothing that a wipedown with some silicone oil did not fix

Baseplate however, looked like it was well used, definitely not a mag that was sitting in a warehouse in Moscow or Kiev; definitely saw some service...

Well, You saw the "before"; now behold the "After"

IMHO; it looks much better; the mag body is now slightly matte, even after the WD40 bath; I can always polish it a little with some plastic polish to bring out the sheen a little. The mag now has a nice dark shade of orange that will look great on my MAK-90.

Hope you guys like it too, and if not? Too bad, my mag.

Looks great Tiger! Definitely a big improvement and a surprise to me to use Easy Off!

I used it in the past to remove some heavy layering of Krylon on an old CVC helmet shell for refinishing; it works great, but is on the caustic side, so gloves and lots of ventilation is a must. I think I will put a US made floorplate and follower on it, since the stock floorplate it has right now is really cruddy and will require some serious stripping and repainting. Might take it to a shop to get it polished to bring out some gloss, but it works great as is.
