 US Palm AK mags

How many folks here are using them?

Do you consider them an upgrade to an surplus Euro mag?

Did you have any problems with surplus Euro mags that made you buy the US Palm mags?

The cheapest I've seen them for sale is still more than double the price of the mags from AIM.

Suarez and his folks on his board seem to think they're the best thing ever. But I try not to drink too much of the Kool-Aid.

What say you?

The Kool_Aid is great.

Lighter than steal, I have watched Doug Little do push-ups off of one in his rifle and have seen many running them in class with zero issues (average round count per class is 500 plus). YMMV.

Very bias opinion since we work so closely with US PALM. But honestly all we've heard from customers as well as employees that use them is that they are great!!

When I was doing the fam fire during my range qual we were given these to use, it's the first time I have ever seen a FTF with an AK. I have to ask why these even exist as military AK mags are more than G2G and can be had for $8 a piece. If you don't like steel run waffles with the metal inserts. I never liked the Tango Down style mags because I think they are bulky and that it's stupid that you can't take them apart. I'm not trying to be a troll I just wanted to play devils advocate. The 5.56 version of these were designed as desposable mags for the SCAR16 which is fine for SOCOM but I have no opfund that the Gov pays for so I try to stick with inexpensive proven stuff. YMMV

I can't see any reason to buy them. They're too expensive.

I'm not sure which kind other than it was an AKM of some sort, probably Romanian. I was doing a qual for the company I was deploying for. As for 922R I see what you mean but with all the US furniture and parts it's pretty easy to square an AK away without compromising it's function or design, or messing with the mags.

I want to be clear that US palm makes some cool stuff but I just don't like these mags when I can get metal reinforced Bulgarian or Polish polymer mags for as little as $15. Im not Into polymer 7.62 AK mags but if I were this is what inwould go with as there are tough and have been in service for a while now. I'm mostly a AK 74 guy and i favor Bakelite or Russian/ Bulgy polymer.

At work we used steel or Russian bakelite mags. I'm still kind of mad I couldn't bring some of the 7.62 bakelites home

Here's where I'm coming from I love US Palm's stuff! But I'm no fanboy because I do not like the mags. I bought one when I first got into the platform to see what the score was. Functioned fine but didn't load with the maglula loader. Also, I don't like that they can't be disassembled for function, etc. The baseplate on the US Palms is glued on. That's just a ticking time bomb if you ask me no matter what the adhesive used is.

Bottom line, the steel surplus are good to go but the Bulgy Circle 10s are better and both can be had for cheaper if you hunt. Just not sure where the US Palms fit in apart from 922r compliance parts.

US Palm topcovers and battle grips, that's another story––they're the first thing that gets put onto any of my AKs because they ROCK!

I'm glad US Palm is in the magazine game though and hope that they put out another generation of magazines and keep up their amazing innovations and work.

Bakelite rules.I cannot find Bakelite for under 20.00 no matter how many I buy. The Palm mags will get the same treatment as Magpul and every magazine producer in the US or the world. I love the capitalist way it makes them buckle down and bring better and better gear out. Some people will want the color to match their gear or rifle, some do not care, some must have only what mother Russia has. The important part is we can openly discuss it.

I would like to see US Palm make a more traditional magazine that isn't as boxy and can be taken apart for the AK47 and AK74. I'm tired of being at the mercy of what's being imported.

To answer your questions in order.

1. No

2. Hell NO!

3. I like surplus because they are proven and work. They also do not have their feed lips break just from being loaded. They also do not break when dropped.

4. As to 'Kool Aid' all I can say the Jim Jones suicide group loved it also. I feel the same way about PALM mags.

If you upgrade you will be able to go into the archives and see the one I cut in half. It was NOT pretty. The thread wasn't either.

I didn't watch the video but have a feeling I know what it says...

Unless they have gone through a redesign the reinforcement of the locking lug is severely lacking and prone to failure.

stick with military mags that were built in a country that uses the AK and you wont have problems
just my 2 cents,IMHO,YMMV

I think US Palm is on the right track, but are not quite there yet. My issue with AK mags in general is that the ends of the magazines (both ends) have stuff that sticks out; either base plate, or mag catch latch. This makes it harder to insert and withdraw the mags from a mag pouch. By eliminating the base plate (or at least stepping away from the original commie design), they make the magazine width uniform, and easier to withdraw from a magazine pouch (at least if you put the base in first).

Where they fail, IMO, is with the reinforcement of the locking catch. Not thick enough; and the lack of it on the feed lips. Had they done that, they would be dangerously close to the best thing ever.

..but they're not.

I had a US Palm that I used in my Saiga. As far as Polymers go, I prefer the Circle 10 Bulgarians.. With that said, all I use now are Com-block metal ones and Russian Bakelite...

I hope K-var decides to start producing 30rd Circle 10 clones. They already are making the 5rd mags with steel lugs like the 8ulgarian ones.
