U.S. made smooth side poly 7.62x39 mags (Tapco)
I know that it's been posted over in the Industry section, but I figured that this might get more traffic (Mods please feel free to lock and remove if neccessary).
How nice looking are these mags? I think they will be making them in 5.45x39 as well. I'd be super stoked to see them in .223.
Link to the thread?
They look great and all, but is there any steel in the locking tabs?
I'll be getting a few of the orange smooth-sided 7.62x39 mags.
Must resist urge to purchase Tapco product for my rifle....
Im not going to lie as much as i hate tapco mags they actually stepped up and made them look good. If they would only put metal locking tabs in them then i might buy some, but its a step up from those hideous mags they were putting out.
it always boils down to price and quality. Once upon a time it was cheaper in the 5.45 world to buy surplus. Surplus was better mag all the way around period. Now with the price and availability of those mags it may be a different story. 7.62x39 surplus is still cheaper, unless you're talking Bulgarian waffle mags,
For me and most of my uses, a "range" mag would be more than sufficient. I don't drop my mags or throw them (unless at a class, the sometimes that happens), nor do I do that with my rifle, so the steel in the mags aren't really necessary to me, but they are preferred.
If these mags are priced right, which I will go check, then they may be worth buying so as to "save" my surplus mags for "real" possible use in the future.
my 2 cents anyway

According to their website there arent any distributors yet.
Definitely buying a bunch for range mags, I only hope they make them in 5.45 as well!
Glad to see a US made AK mag that doesn't try to look all tactical. The old ones just looked cheesy to me.

^^
I'm gonna ask Tapco on the Indy forum and see what they say.
Customer service rep @ tapco said they should be listed at retailers in the next week or so.

Sweet. Thanks! The prices online range from $12-$15. I'll grab a good amount of the orange ones for sure. I've wondered for quite a while why no one has done this earlier. I'm going to see if they make 5.45 smooth side mags, if they can be made to work in my 5.56 Arsenal AK's.
no 5.45 smooth ones yet that I saw.
Wake me when Tapco produces a magazine that uses proper reinforcements. There are already plenty of inexpensive all-polymer mags in this price range.
I'd be in for at least 2 black ones. I really wish they were reinforced though... as I love the look.
bout freaking time someone made mags without all those supid ribs!
Ill be waiting for 5.45. You would think that they would have this style in 5.45 considering the market for surplus is stupid.
at minimum id like a metal rear lug with a few holes drilled in it to let the injection molding flow through it and fuse the two together. shouldn't be too hard and add to the cost of mags maybe a dollar or two in the end. that being said i will still buy plenty of these.
I'll definitely be buying a few of these

Yup at least 1 of each in both 7.62 and 5.45 when they are available.
WTF?
Tapco made something not fugly as shit?

I'd imagine they have been working on these mags long before the 74 surplus mags dried up.
i might get some, my one tapco mag has not failed me yet.

Well, it does have there giant logo on it. Which turns me off.
An AK magazine with an image of an M4 on it?
Hey, Tapco. We all know who you are. Plain text would be much better on this.

Ya but at least it will be hidden in the magwell.
Just imagine if the black one was...(gulp)......PLUM. Whatever, I will be buying several of these. Look cool and still have the USA-made mag in the rifle. Once I get one of these I'll try an idea I have to make it really look like Bakelite. Don't hold your breath, God knows how long it'll be until they start to show up on the street. I still haven't laid eyes on the first 'Bakelite' version. I also have plans for the black one.

The first Bakelite version has been out for quite some time and is readily available. I have one and my friend has one of the 5.45 Bakelites
Anyone got a hold of one of these yet?
Why couldn't they just make them metal reinforced? Fully supported mag from a company that has excellent customer service? Win/win

Why should they waste money on a 'feel-good' feature that's not needed in this design/material?

What gives you the idea that is isn't need in this design or material?
The black smooth sides are on the market. Orange and flat dark earth are nowhere to be found. Red recently appeared on Tapco's website. I think I'll be going red once it's on the market.

You might not be able to leave it loaded for 20 years but they still function great without metal reinforcements. So why spend all that money on new molds (which are very expensive) when what they already have works? I put a Tapco mag in my 74 and put about half of my weight (250 lbs.) on it and no deformation, stretching, or discoloration on the locking tab. Promags might break but the Tapco polymer is pretty tough. Besides, they don't intend to sell to foreign militaries, their intended market is civilians. When are we ever going to be in a situation where they will be under enough stress to require metal reinforcements? They'll do just fine for me. But that's just my 2 cents.
Now, as for the smooth sides, I can't wait for orange. I'll probably buy 4 orange, 2 black and 2 red. Hopefully they fit nicely in surplus mag pouches.

You've completely disregarded all of the gun shop commandos who need to have metal reinforcements in order to fight off the new world order take over! You're a sheep!
When someone finds the orange in stock somewhere, post up a link.
