Super rusted crate of 7n6.....is the ammo inside going to be ruined?????
I've never encountered such a rusted tin of surplus. Is this gonna be ok or do I need to send this back?

Open it up and find out.

It could be ok but the only way to know is to crack it open. Where did you buy the ammo from?
If it's surface rust and you don't see any holes you'll probably be ok.
It just came today, I didn't want to open it yet in case I need to contact the seller and ship it back.
There are some small holes rusted through the bottom, about a millimeter or so in size.
Also, it appears that the wooden crate was originally for some 7.62x54R ammo, as one side was painted over where it was originally stamped, then restamped with 5.45 on the other side, and under the cardboard liner on the bottom was a pink slip of paper listing 2 tins of 7.62, 880 rounds.
This came from Military Shooters LLC.

I didn't see any holes in it initially, but I'll take a closer look.
So tell us the seller?

Military Shooters LLC.
There was recently a place selling rusty cans of 54r ammo, but the ammo itself was fine...this is way more rusted than those cans were...like the rest said..only one way to find out.
Open the can, then transplant the ammo (if it's still ok) to a new ammo can.
It's not as good as having it sealed up in a tuna can, but it you pack it right, putting the ammo in a new can should work out just fine.

I bought some X54R rusty can special from copes. Not only was it rusted outside, it was dented pretty bad (which I blame on the FedEx guy). I was bummed out and called copes. They immediately offered to take it back with shipping on them. I was surprised to hear that and decided to just open the can as they advised. They would refund my money if the ammo was bad inside. Ammo is as fresh as the day it was packaged. If the can is not punctured in any way, I think you should be good to go.
I would call them and ask if they would take it back if the ammo inside is bad. I'm pretty sure they don't open the crate and check each can for rust so you can't really blame them. They've been pretty good so far and I've ordered a lot of ammo from them in the past with no problems.
OR, you can sell it to me for cents on the dollar and I can do proper disposal of your rusty can.

Lacquer coated/Sealed bullet/primer military grade ammo... the ammo is sealed far better than the tin. Don't hassle yourself, shoot the shit out of it
Curiosity would have already gotten the best of me and I would have opened it by now.

Yeah, as soon as I saw it I would have been opening it.
I keep checking in to see if he opened the can yet!

I sent an email to the dealer I purchased it from. I will wait to hear from them before I open it.......I probably would have cracked it open already but the tool was missing.......truth be told, I could probably just crack it open by hand on the one really rusted corner

Drop the can in a bucket of water.
If you don't see air bubbles rising to the surface, shoot it.
I've seen plenty of those rusted cans in iraq on our raids, and the ammo inside is good to shoot. Open it and shoot it, but please post pics before, during and after you do.
Do most people just leave the ammo in the cans? I usually open a few of them and transfer to USGI ammo cans. They seal tight and are a lot easier to open then the spam cans....and they have a handle with makes them easier to carry. I usually try to have at least a few cans transfered at all times...

I have a few on hand, one at a time open, all the time.
But I keep all my mags loaded.
Well, the ammo inside looked absolutely pristine. I took 300 rounds of it to the range today (the packs that were right over the holes in the bottom) and it all shot 100%

.
I also had contacted Military Shooters LLC. before I opened the tin, and they assured me that if there was any kind of a problem they would make good on it.....great people!
So the lesson to be learned......don't judge the ammo by it's tin!

I used to buy the shit out of Aimsurplus's "Rusted and dented" tins.
Come TEOTWAWKI, a rusted tin of ammo will be a windfall.
Glad to hear everything is ok.

I also ordered 2 cans of it from Cope's. They called me and asked if I even wanted the cans. Since I was going to repack it (due to the can condition) I had them pull it and send it in a cardboard box instead. I checked every round and they all looked pristine like yours.
